Content (book) delivery question

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forums, and after browsing around for the past two days and not yet being able to find an answer, I figured I'd register and ask.

I'm interested in finding out how to deliver content (ebook) directly to the actual reader, ie. Kobo, Kindle and so on.

If anyone has any pointers I would very much appreciate it.

thanks,

Deliver what content?
How?

Most modern ereaders can get commercial content via WiFi.
All can get content from PC via USB.
Some can download via onboard browsers.
Kindles have a unique email address you can send content to.

Sorry should have made it clear, I want to be able to deliver e-books (required format isn't a problem (e-pub, adw, ...)) directly to the reader via a web front end.

They log onto the website, select the book they want, and in turn get a download link that they can use straight on their device, for Android and iOS devices I'm actually developing my own simple reader, but the concern is for devices like Kobo, Kindle and Sony readers.

Thanks,

Are you saying that you are an author and are self publishing and delivering your own ebooks?

Or are you saying that you want to promote and sell and deliver other peoples ebooks on your web site?

I'm actually in the process of starting up a web store that will promote and sell books for a set of different publishers but in a foreign language.

thanks,

If the books are DRM-free a direct download from a website is an option for Kindles. You may need a tweaked webpage though.

I'd have it so they can download to the PC instead. Anyone who is buying books outside of Kobo/Amazon/B&N will know how to sideload books on to their reader (in fact more people will know how to sideload than open the built in web browser).

I would think that most Kindle users* don't know how to do either one, and it would be better to offer a Kindle version on Amazon, and link to that from your store.

*Let's bear in mind that Mobileread users are not "most Kindle users."

Wouldn't using Amazon for Kindle books cut a significant chunk off the small online shop's income?

It would of course be the easiest for the user, although there are other things to consider - I'm not sure if Amazon allows books in "random" (not-major) foreign languages? (I assume they do but IIRC there at least used to be some restrictions for the KDP/self-published books?)

And also, a "local" shop can often offer payment methods specific to the country, e.g. bank transfer, local debit cards, PayPal. Most international customers need a credit card to buy on Amazon, as far as I know, and depending on the country, this might not be something the majority of potential customers will have.

In any case, I also don't know any way to automatically send ePub books to ePub readers, but Kindle books can certainly be sent directly to Kindles. One place I'm familiar with that uses that mechanism is NetGalley: the user has to download the ePub or PDF file but - if the publisher has allowed that - can also opt to send the book directly to the Kindle.

I don't know how it's set up on their end, but on the user's end, it requires telling them your Kindle e-mail address and adding the sender's (in this case NetGalley's) e-mail address to allowed e-mail addresses on your Manage Your Kindle page. (In an online store's case, the store has to provide the user with that information, i.e. the address they're using to send the books to the Kindles.)

It's not particularly complicated and any Kindle user who has looked into sending "personal documents" to their Kindle should be familiar with the process, but it certainly takes a couple of extra steps. And the books will likely show up as "personal documents", not "books".

Thank you for all the suggestions, especially mentioning NetGalley, at least their FAQ's have detailed instructions on how to help users get to their books, which gives me an idea of how to start off the whole setup.

Many thanks once again,

Amazon also offer a "Send to Kindle" plug-in which many blogs use.

This cuts out the steps of adding email address and using the Kindle email address.

ganxy.com offer "Ganxy is a simple way to buy and sell content on the web. " when I bought Patricia C Wrede's Wrede on Writing: Tips, Hints, and Opinions on Writing the site used them to fulfil the order including a EPub download.
