Here it's not so much the deliberate scratching (the rope-wound scratchposts and bathmat do for that), but the rapid, repeated clambering-up-and-over that happens at Kitty-Skitterin' Time. Leather would last about five minutes, but dark-coloured microfibre seems to be a little more resilient.

Despite having three scratch pads around the house, mine prefers the heavy furniture that doesn't move @kennyc - I don't think I'd be able to read in that chair for any length of time! Any new chair that I buy will have to have firm back support and allow opening of the hip angle - I spend too much time in a desk chair and I need to stretch out!

Before buying our current leather lounge suite, I did some research. From what I could find, cats don't usually like to scratch leather. In the four or five years we've had it, none of the cats have tried to scratch it. But, they do like to sleep on it.

It's like Meeera described - the cat leaps onto the back of the couch and digs in for balance, or to propel herself to her next destination. Leather is definitely the best choice for dogs though. So easy to clean!

"Stressless" make some delightful recliners - with leather coverings the cats just slide off them ....

With regard to reading chairs: I've a chair in my study / computer room that can be titled backward as far as 140 degrees or so. It's my desk chair. Normally it's upright, but when I want to read, I tilt it backward and combine it with a foot stool. I don't have the room in here to put in a chair specifically for reading, and I like this chair better than the couch for reading.

My cats are very good about using their cardboard and post for scratching. When they scratch on furniture, it is deliberate to get your attention to DO SOMETHING that they want. Play, eat, give attention. This often occurs when I'm trying to read. However, as another mentioned, they claw into the backs and arms for balance or to leap elsewhere, so leather or similar is out. The top of the back of my new sewing chair (artificial leather) already has claw marks from that. My sister and BIL just bought new recliners from Cosco. It has this brushed rayon fabric that her cats don't scratch at all. Looks good, feels nice. I just haven't seen this fabric on anything I've looked at. My cats don't scratch on the current chair that I have which is a recliner I bought used. It's an almost smooth, heavy weight duck. Even the claw marks from keeping balance on the back don't show. Alas, it appears to be a fabric that is no longer in fashion because I couldn't find anything like it in the samples at the furniture stores. Last edited by Tarana; 12-23-2013 at 09:56 AM.

We have artificial leather recliners - the tops and arms badly scratched by the cats. The real leather ones, though, are relatively unscathed (except when they've accidentally been pushed off).

I've heard that mohair upholstery is a good option if you have cats.

We have cats and leather furniture, including Ikea poang chairs (over twenty years old) They seem to be surviving well, but the cats have logs with the bark still on to scratch. Biggest problem is removing the cats and dogs to claim chairs or sofa. |

Hello, I'm not sure what your price range is, but this is the most comfortable chair I've ever sat in. I can sit for hours and hours: http://www.ekornes.com/us/stressless...ssless-voyager I can't vouch for the latest model, because the model I have is ~6 years old. I will vouch for the quality though. Very nice furniture. I've been a lurker in these forums for a while, but this post caused me to register Good luck in your search. Regards! |
