It was probably related to the affiliates file. Some affiliates don't allow changing these options. It probably was wiped or something during the update and replaced correctly at the restart.

Hmmm, here I have three entries: kobo, facebook, Adobe. Nothing else. Strange. I saw it in 3.0.1 and now it is gone. Probably because I am on the Japanese market place?

I don't think that's the issue. My affiliate is just Kobo.

Nevertheless I cannot reproduce the issue. I've checked the database and then I've compressed it with your utils and the ghost book has been completely erased. I've re-sent the book using jgoguen's driver and now I can open the book normally. It seems the book got corrupted ramdomly...

Nevertheless, thanks for your hint.

I'm still having problems with books opening. I might have been reading a few minutes ago, I put it to sleep manually (I don't trust the magnetic sleep feature but have it enabled to wake), and suddenly, if I want to open it again it won't load. Fortunately it doesn't freeze and I can go on reading another book. Most times I have to delete it for it to load again. It's happened with three different books, all side loaded.

Actually My Kobo Aura HD is functioning the best ever. No issues, connection is fine via wifi although the insistence of Kobo checking on send notifications( that's the one where kobo sends you specific ads and displays them on your device) every time I wifi sync is insane, even though I have specifically turned it off. And the only issue I have noticed is one mentioned by Robert Sawyer about the spacing in the 3 examples he has provided. Other then that I would give 3.1.0 3 thumbs up (based on Tivo ratings)

regards

Please believe me when I tell you that the presence or absence of the options you mentioned is based on the affiliate in the affiliates.conf file. I have seen the problem in the past and it was due to a corrupt affiliates.conf file. Fixing it solved the problem. As I said, there was probably a problem with it and during the restart it was rewritten.

Ditto. Even with 2.10 I had some wifi issues and slow responses to touch, although the PDF rendering was corrected to include that unremovable footer when it came or scaling pages. With 3.10, it's about as good as the software has ever been. Still not as good experience as my Kindle Touch or PW (no wifi driver bugs there I've seen), but a step up from the usual "the user as the bug tester" experience.

Since one of the 2.x updates I have experienced the situation where my Glo appears to be stuck on loading my book on switching on, but I have found that touching the top right of the screen prompts a refresh and the page appears.

Curious, what format is your book? Epub? Native kepub? Or epub to kepub conversion?

I am still having the issue with my Aura HD and 3.1 where I have to reboot to sync more than one day in a row.

Two more books that clearly look awful under firmware 3.1.0

Here are links to two more ebooks I've purchased from the Kobo Canadian bookstore. Both have atrocious formatting under firmware 3.1.0 compared to earlier releases; again, the problem is the complete elimination of vertical spacing between elements (I imagine the problems also show up in the free previews of these books):

http://store.kobobooks.com/en-CA/ebo...off-the-bridge

http://store.kobobooks.com/en-CA/ebo...planet-blues-1

The first one, which uses a lot of complex formatting, shows the problem on almost every page.

The second one is particularly irritating for me, as it's one of my own novels. Look at the Copyright Page, the Dedication, and the beginning of any chapter.

I've provided links to works from a wide variety of commercial publishers (Workman Publishing and Penguin Canada in the two examples above); this is not a case of the firmware tripping up on the quirky formatting done by a single oddball publisher; this is an across-the-board problem.

I hope progress is being made on this.

To quote Geoff: "Well the kepub reader stylesheet is quite screwed up in this firmware version. There is no vertical space between objects so everything just runs together. Also everything is in the same sized font, book title, chapter headings, text, everything. What a mess."

It may not be that all books are affected, but it's blatantly obvious -- the rendering under 3.1.0 looks atrocious -- with the titles I've checked from the Canadian Kobo store. Here are three that clearly demonstrate the problem; they look AWFUL under 3.1.0:

http://store.kobobooks.com/en-CA/ebo...inking-clearly

http://store.kobobooks.com/en-CA/ebook/social

http://store.kobobooks.com/en-CA/ebook/burning-paradise

GeoffR's JPGs, posted above, don't do justice to the mess; comparing the above books on a Mini (which is immune to the 3.1.0 upgrade) or another E Ink Kobo that hasn't yet been bumped to 3.1.0 and you'll see. (I bought these books, but I imagine the problem shows up in the free previews, too.)

It's not just chapter heads that are affected but also subheads within a chapter, epigrams, picture captions -- anything with complex formatting.

It looks TERRIBLE.

I'm having the same problem. Personally, I've only seen it with sideloaded ebooks being loaded as .kepub.epub -- and those go to my (Sandisk) Micro SD card. Reloading the book as a plain .epub has caused the problem to go away for me (because, I presume, it bypasses the ACCESS rendering engine).

I have seen this same issue with just one kepup that I bought from kobo (Goldfinch) but I use epubs for the most part anyway to avoid the wasted header space on kepups, so I might have the issue with some others as well but I tried several others with no issue. There must be something about some kepubs that the access render engine doesn't like.
