I think the decision to go with the Kindle PW is a good one. Also, I highly recommend that you use Calibre to manage your library and convert formats. A Google search will lead you to a number of great tutorials on how to set up and use the program as well as tips on converting formats and information about how DRM infects/affects your ebooks.

Thank you for letting me know. I didn't realize that. I'll have to take that into consideration.

@jscarbo: I like that amazon is known for good customer support and most people with kindles seem very happy with them. I might take a ride to bestbuy and see if I can find a kindle to try out. I doubt they'll have a kobo though.

A couple of more questions occurred to me. Does anyone know if the dictionary for either the kobo glo or kindle pw will work on ebooks downloaded outside of the company's website.
I also wanted to double check, do both ereaders have the same easiness in downloading ebooks from outside websites like project gutenberg or in working with calibre?
thanks again

I can't comment on the Kindles, but the Kobo firmware provides full dictionary function for sideloaded epubs.

For getting the books onto the device, the calibre support is very good (though maybe I shouldn't be saying that). You can also download books using the built-in browser. Using calibre as a server works and Project Gutenberg works as well. I have tried some others without problem.

Both Kobo and Kindle dictionaries work on side loaded books. Regarding Calibre integration, with regard to collections in particular, the Kindle PW does not work at all (out of the box), but the Kobo works brilliantly. I had a PW1 for 10 months and was so happy to get back to using a Kobo when the Aura came out. With the PW I had to jailbreak and use hacks to a) load my own custom fonts and b) get any form of functionality when using Calibre to organise my library into collections. The work these guys do to get round the limitations imposed by Amazon is fantastic but importing collections from Calibre to a Kindle is still far more complicated than it should be; the Sonys and Kobos, (and possibly other makes I haven't tried), make it so easy and quick. One other point is that as I haven't been keeping up with the PW2, I don't know if any of the hacks still work.

In my opinion, Kindle Collections don't work well with or without Calibre but if you insist on using them, there is a Kinnde Collections plug-in for Calibre that works fine within the inherent limitations of the overall Collections feature.

The good news is that if you use Calibre, you don't need to bother with Kindle Collections anyway. You can easily set up user-defined columns for genre, read/unread, or any other criteria you find useful. You can also have multiple libraries. For example, I have separate libraries for fiction, non-fiction and for foreign language books (since my wife reads primarily in her native Spanish language). In the Calibre GUI, each library is displayed in a single, scrollable, sortable multi-column page and it's extremely easy to quick-switch from one library to another.

There are no hacks necessary to add custom fonts to the Paperwhite: http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/201...hite-no-hacks/

Nor are any hacks required to work with Kindle Collections, even though I still recommend that Calibre users set up their own custom columns and ignore the Kindle Collections feature altogether.

A good idea to check before posting old information. The "USE_ALT_FONTS" method described in the link you posted doesn't work on the PW2. This has been discussed at great length in the Kindle forum here at MR.

Thanks for your input. Overall I think the kobo would be more usable for me because it supports epub and seems more open to downloading books from different sites. I'm just worried about kobo's customer support. If something does happen and I need customer support, it seems like amazon is more reliable. Because of that I think I'll end up going with kindle.

That is exactly why I am probably making the same decision as you drizzle. I would really like to try the Kobo Aura for it's diminutive size, but the customer support makes me wary, and as I'm already a pretty happy Amazon customer and Kindle user, after much deliberation, I've just placed my order for a Paperwhite....

Thanks, Harry. I stand corrected! I use the PW1. I haven't been following the PW2 discussions and wasn't aware that the ALT FONTS method didn't work on the PW2. BTW, I did check for newer info for the PW2 by doing a Google search and nothing came up but didn't think to do a separate search in the MR forums.

Becareful downloading the firmware update for the PW1 when it comes. I know some folks are concerned that the Alt Font hack might not work after the PW1 firmware is updated.

It works in the current PW1 firmware.
