I have a slight problem with splitted lines. Is that part of the known issues? I thought it was a problem with Pocket, and sent a mail to them, but it does the same with epubs: occasionally a line is split horizontally between the bottom of a page and the top of the next page. Up to now the shave off is thin enough on one side (top or bottom) that the line is readable on the other. Otherwise, the reactions to tapping top or bottom might be a touch slower, but the advantage of pocket plus return button is enough to overcome something that doesn't come up much once one starts reading.

What I've notice more is that the line at the bottom of the screen will lose the bottom of the descenders. If I power cycle my Aura HD, it seems to clear up for a while but then will happen again. I do have the footer set using Metazoa's patcher which might be part of the problem.

David

That could very well be that and I wouldn't be surprised. Kobo made the choice to allow previous ereaders to have access to new features, but I wouldn't blame them to try and avoid to shoot themselves in the foot by giving some "alone time" to the Aura.

As a sidenote when Sony introduced Evernote in the T2 and fixed some T1 bugs*, there wasn't any firmware update to provide those to the T1. All the Sony users had to do was to buy a T2, period

* as seen on a forum, regarding the T1 bugs.

Hmm, I rebooted my GLO, and now suddenly the freeze bug has stopped happening. It seems I am entirely rid of it. Sorry for any confusion.

Sorry, that was me. The update was so easy and worked so well that there didn't seem to be any harm. It's shocking to me that Kobo hasn't released first to their so-called "hardcore" readers crowd.

Don't sweat it. My opinion is that, much like the first firmware release for the Aura HD which gave it the tile interface, 2.9.0 was rushed out for the Aura and there are still quite a few rough edges. Hopefully, the current beta cycle will yield a firmware release with most of those bugs eliminated. Of course, then we can get a whole new selection of bugs.

Regards,
David

I'd be just happy to see some of the non UI bugs fixed; the ones that actually affect how the books look!

What font are you using? Outside of the beta firmware, the times I have seen this, the books all had Charis SIL as an embedded font. And from memory, I reproduced it by sideloading Charis SIL at some time.

As of 2.9.0, the in book stats are only available for purchased kepubs. To see them, press the icon that looks like a graph. It should be the second from the right.

Yes, Charis SIL ModifiedLarger (sideloaded) has been my favoured font for a while. It is not embedded (I mostly remove embeddeds), but it did apply to Pocket articles. I just changed it to Linux libertine in one article, and Kobo applied it to all - my current epub retained Charis though.

@DNSB: it's not just the descenders - a very small part of the bottom (alternately the top) of everything is shaved off as well. I do not use metazoa's patcher (I like the book title at the top and the chapter or short story title at the bottom), and all my kepubs are Calibre created kepubs (kobo touch extended plugin), even those few I bought from Kobo: I download epubs to my PC and run them through Calibre - too many problems managing them otherwise.

If I remember correctly, the modified versions of Charis SIL have changes to the font metrics. It might be that these changes that are causing the problem.

When you change the reader settings, the device stores them for the current book and updates the configuration. This means that the new settings are used when you open a new book or a book that doesn't have stored settings. And reopening a book with stored settings will use those setting.

Huh, did they actively go in and remove stats from kepubified epubs? Here's hoping a future version of the extended driver will bring them back :-)

When asked on the beta list, Kobo said the stats for sideloaded kepubs had errors. They implied that when that gets sorted out, the stats would be brought back. I'm not going to hold my breath.

Huh. Ok, good to know. I guess I always took "time remaining" with a huge pinch of salt anyway. But I kinda liked the chapter diagram.

Well I notice that 2.9.0 on the Aura hd does display percent read at the top when you touch the center of the book for the home icon.

Has anyone played the new game unblock it,,, yet?

regards
