I have a astigmatism in my left eye and I'm near sighted. My glasses aren't cute but I have to read with my glasses on too otherwise I start squinting.

When you guys have some extra time, check how your color vision is with this online test. It is certainly an eye opener. It does not work on tablets/phones.

I did this in my bedroom last night and scored 30, tried it again this morning in daylight and got 0, quite surprising as while my eyesight is fine, I don't think I've great colour vision. From the couple of photos posted of PW2 with colour hues I can see them very faintly, but there were a few of the pictures posted of the original PW last year that I couldn't see any.

I'm in total agreement with this. It seems pinholes are the main issue this year and the colour hues & any other faults are minimal, but there is still a bit of variation. So mainly a manufacturing issue? I think it's telling that the Kobo Aura looks to be similarly affected by pinholes, but while the Kobo Aura HD did have some examples of this problem, it was far less. It was made in limited quantities and is a little more expensive, so tighter quality control in the manufacturing process?

I am ready to upgrade from my Kindle 3, but have now all but ruled out the Kobo Aura due to a couple of other issues apart from the pinholes, so was hoping the PW2 would be the answer. Not sure it's going to be though, unless I'm willing to keep sending it back until I get a perfect one, or wait a little longer until they fix what is hopefully just early manufacturing issues. We shouldn't have to do that though.

Regarding the dictionary missing functionality, unfortunately I do not think it was due to lack of time, but to a layout design option.

I've taken this image from a Youtube Video and it doesn't look unfinished to me, just a different design direction. No hope

The KPW2 I preordered arrived almost perfect for me, but with light leak on the lower right corner which was a distraction in low light conditions. My replacement for it arrived today, and I'm happy to say that I am very pleased with it. No color blotches like the 4 KPW1s I went through, no pinholes/dust trapped in the screen, even lighting, and no light leaks.

They threw away TTS and audiobooks when they and Sony were among the only ebook reader makers to have the feature when the PW1 rolled around, so I wouldn't be too surprised. Still, it's odd how they wouldn't have this feature in 5.4.0, when they were presumably working on it for the PW1. At least it can be fixed in future firmware, unlike HW issues.

I have also noticed that coincidence. I have also noticed that many of the complaints are coming from folks who do NOT own any Amazon products but instead prefer Apple products.

It may be that some folks are just too picky and some have had a very bad experience with Amazon in the distant past and are still going over old grudges.

I have NEVER purchased any computer hardware or software without bugs and many of those bugs are serious. I simply work around the bugs and keep moving.

We have to tolerate small bugs in all aspects of life.

The purpose of an eReader is to READ eBooks. If a small pin hole only viewable with a flashlight and magnifying glass using a dark image, is present, so what? If a barely visible hue is present, again so what?

The fonts on the PW 2013 are crystal clear with great contrast between dark fonts and a light background. The old PW 2012 was good, as well, but its contrast was lower and the background was darker. I continue to use BOTH devices.

Finally, photos mean nothing. I could use Adobe Photoshop to prove any theory I want. Most of us are amateur photo hobbyists and would not know how to use any camera to get a true image of what really is the situation. The only test is our own perception of the product.

I see a little bit of every kind of device listed for you except any Kindle. Have you ever owned a PW1, or any kindle? Have you even seen a PW2? You are in Japan so I seriously doubt it. And yet you are somehow an expert on the PW2 who can mystically detect that they have no issues? At least Sirmaru is fanboy with extreme visual challenges, not that that justifies his attacks. But in your case there is no excuse for implying that all the MR people who are seeing hardware defects, and fine people they are, are not actually seeing these defects, but somehow imagining them due to past prejudices. Shame on you.

Totally agree! I cannot see why so many people think that an unprofressional, unverified, and uncontrolled internet encyclopedia is such a great thing. Most of the articles I've seen are poorly written, have incorrect facts, and do little more than link to other articles. Adding a Wikipedia link to an app is a negative IMO.

Isn't adding the ability to switch between dictionaries part of the most recent KPW update that came out last month? There's no likelihood that Amazon won't have that option on the new Paperwhite. If it wasn't on it at launch, it will be part of the first update.

To be fair, just from reading the forums at MR I get the general impression that Kobo owners are a little more forgiving than those who own Kindles. I don't think it's unrealistic expectations for the most part, just people wanting, and demanding a good product from a company that has it's own high standards?
