Apple has already stated how these files are stored. It's encrypted file stored on the processor. If somebody did actually manage to get that encrypted data there is virtually nothing at all they could do with it. And the scanner isn't made available to 3rd party applications.

In all reality this means your fingerprint is far more secure in the phone than pretty much any other place it may reside.

But if you're still worried, tubemonkey appears to have a solution.

Just because you're paranoid can simply mean you're paranoid but in this case there's a simple answer for you - Don't buy/get/use the damn phone, get another make/model - there, all your security concerns answered in one go...

What does this have to do with my post?
Of course I'm aware it can store multiple prints. I'm not the one who thought putting one fingerprint in there made it work with all fingers and a toe. I was responding to the poster who did.

You certainly can put me on your ignore list if you want. I promise it won't hurt my feelings. In the meantime, I will continue to express my opinion.

You are insisting that fingerprint unlocking is not a desirable feature because it still requires a password. My opinion is that if that password is too much to handle, you probably shouldn't have a smartphone in the first place since typically so much private and sensitive data is stored on smartphones. Looking back through your posts it appears I did get you mixed up with another conversation where somebody was complaining about not being able to remember the password. Sorry about that.

Well the other poster never said that the author of the article only set up one print but you replied with "the finger he set up".

But you go bold caps lock if people express their opinion on phone features that they don't have to use?

In other posts, not the one that you quoted because there I was commenting on holymadness' choices in analogies, I was saying that I don't think that the fingerprint unlocking is a desirable feature to people who don't want to use passwords on the current generations of devices because it still requires a password.

Try reading it again:

The answers, of course, are no on the first part and yes on the second. The scanner can distinguish between a finger and toe because each has to be set up separately. In the review he linked to and in many others it is mentioned that other fingerprints not set up do not unlock it.

It being an optional feature is not opinion. That is a fact. My opinion is that that fact doesn't seem to be sinking in. Since people are misreading things all over this thread, the bold caps makes the point clear. Again, if you don't like it, you can follow your own advice and not read it.

And holymadness, myself, and every review I have read disagree with you for reasons that have been well covered at this point. You are entitled to your opinion. But I believe the only way it will hold true and the scanner won't convince more people to use security would be if it doesn't work as well as Apple claims. That remains to be seen. Will it be convenient enough to convince everybody to use it? Of course not. But it will be more convenient and more secure than than current methods.

I didn't realize that an intention to own the device was a requirement to discuss aspects of it here.

Once Apple has licensed this fingerprint sensor for use in other devices there will be a number of possible attack vectors which, sadly, will probably make my concerns seem rather tame.

There was no necessity for owning/intending to own but the title of the thread is the "iPhone 5S, 5C Announced" and you seemed to be seriously concerned about the "terrible" consequences and possibilities of using this fingerprint sensor (which is only on these phones" so my comment, about not getting one, is entirely reasonable - I didn't realise that you were responding to future threats from currently non-existent devices (Apple isn't exactly known for licensing its hardware to other companies)... OK, try tubemonkey's security then...

Maybe I was too subtle on this point. I was suggesting that you should figure out that you are doing the same thing that you are complaining that others are doing: people are complaining about a feature that they don't have to use and you are complaining about opinions that you don't have to read.

You haven't expressed your reasons for disagreeing with me on this. You expressed your reasons for disagreeing with another poster who you thought was me.

As to holymadness' reasoning, which is that the people who chose not to use a passcode with previous iPhone generations must have done so because they didn't want to use a passcode every time, and this is different because they will only have to use the passcode after every reboot, anytime the phone wasn't unlocked for 48 hours, when using gloves, when the fingers are wet, when the fingerprint was misread 5 times as the scanner is designed to function. I disagree.

Since some people in this thread are more concerned w/ putting others down than having a discussion, we'll just have to wait and see what the fallout is from things such as:

So just to get this back on topic a little instead of this tinfoil nonsense.

I am holding in my hot little hand a Silver Iphone 5s and it's beautiful I upgraded from a 3 so its a big change
I logged 3 fingers into the scanner if I don't use one of those 3 it comes up Try again, try again, then on the third try it brings up the passcode keypad. If however I do use one of the correct fingers it opens in a blink of an eye it is seriously fast #loveit.
I haven't had much chance to play further as I'm at work.

64G I had a 32G and did have some spare space but the camera and video is supposed to be really good on this so I could easily see myself going over. I do carry too much music on my phone
