It is a bit surprising. I did not notice it on earlier pics at all. I am not sure if I like it. It might feel a bit more... tactile, when holding the device. It might work out. Also because of the more recessed screen the reader might be useful as a soup bowl as well. Oh well, for me it is a moot point as the device has no front lighting and is therefore of little interest to me. |

You attribute malice where it seems much safer to assume that it's a historical artifact. Amazon bought MobiPocket, which used the .mobi format and made the most minor of tweaks to the DRM format. Once they had invested in that infrastructure, changing it would introduce a high cost vs just sticking with it. It's obviously not hurting their business in any appreciable way, so why would they bother? The vast majority of users have no clue, nor do they case.

I'm not sure it is like this. Amazon introduced KF8/AZW3 and this is almost the same as EPUB (just a little difference). So Amazon could also joined EPUB (with own DRM) besides MOBI. But the choose its on format to to discourage users from using other sources. That's how i see this.

Again, I don't see it as malice. It's easy enough to convert to MOBI (which is sufficient for basic reading needs) and they do nothing to prevent you from doing so... in fact, if I were attributing malice I'd be more likely to point to the Nook (more likely, but still don't), which only lets you use part of the internal storage for side-loaded content -- the Kindle easily allows you to use ALL side-loaded content. I think you're trying to hard to make them out to be the bad guys.

On the other hand, one problem with epub is that high-level vendors (and therefore de facto publishers) like to create their own specialized versions (kepub, etc.), which undermines standardization as well. Last edited by Prestidigitweeze; 09-04-2013 at 01:06 AM.

Just one last argument. If amazon are the good buys as your proclaiming, why does the kindle firmware not just support EPUB besides MOBI, KF8, TOPAZ....

The last thing they want to do is to essentially give away Kindles at cost price, and then have people go and buy ePub books at other stores. They give away Kindles in the expectation that the buyers will then buy content at Amazon.

Thanks, HarryT. This is an importaint point. Because with this people will understand why the Sony Reader is a bit more expensive than an Amazon Reader or a Kobo Reader.
