Possibly that the software must work with the hardware? Much the same reason I can't install Android from my Nexus tablet onto my laptop or Windows 8.1 from my laptop onto my Nexus tablet.

although it is just hardware and software can't damage hardware.
Perhaps you should try browsing various forums for DD-WRT, Tomato, Open-WRT and similar router software. There were quite a few people who managed to brick routers when installing some firmware versions and those were ones that were intended for that hardware. Also look for "JTAG".

I like the removal of the top margin in 2.8.1 on my mini. I re-convert all my epubs in Calibre to remove all margins to begin with then allow the minimum margin size in the settings of the mini itself.

I don't eat pizza while e-reading but also have experienced multiple page turn problems with the mini. I originally had refresh set at 6 pages but last evening experimented with changing it to 3, and that seems to have stopped the problem. We'll see.

Swapping won't work for the same reasons that you cannot play playstation games on a Nintendo.
Different chips, addressing etc. Basic electronics.

I'm with Helen on this one, software most definitely can damage hardware. Software can control hardware and tell it what to do, including telling it to do things that might not be too healthy for it.

I'm sorry to hear that pizza isn't so great in your part of the world, I love the pizza that I get down here in NZ!

I had one CRT monitor that was destroyed when a software update on the computer changed the refresh rate to one that it could not support. Blew the power supply in the attempt. The semiconductors sacrificed themselves to save the fuse.

Well, that update has been out for two weeks now. Plus, I posted on the first page about the calibre support.

.
ALL these things should be user configurable and we should not have to revert to third party tools which is time consuming.

Seeing I have zero interest In a file browser or alternate reading code I have not bothered with it.

This is a well known issue with this device. I don't think there is a built in setting to change that. I wish there was, and I think there should be. There is a fullscreen mod in the developer forum, and I linked to a blog which refers to the problem you described. I have not tried the fullscreen mod yet, but I intend to as soon as my Kobo Aura arrives.

There is a patcher from Metazoa which can reduce the lower margin though you then have issues with trying to select text at the bottom of the screen. For your comments about paragraphs, you might want to try adding widows:0; and orphans: 0; to the epub's css -- Calibre can do this for you by adding "body {orphans: 0; widows: 0;}" in the "Common Options" => "Look and Feel" => "Extra CSS" field. Basically, widows and orphans are intended to prevent lines from being left at the bottom or top of a page. You can google them for more information.

I've added a screen capture of a page after apply Metazoa's patch using FW 2.8.1 and the default configuration file. As you will notice the page number is too small to be really useful but you do get a couple of extra lines on the screen.

David

Thanks for the screenshot. That layout looks almost perfect to me. Did you use the kpg.exe from Metazoa's post on the russian forum? I think a dedicated thread for Metazoa's mod in the dev forum would be a good idea. If there already is one, please direct me to it
