Dia Duit (Hello) from Ireland

Been reading this forum for months and finally decided to register

Still deciding which ereader to buy. I want to read PDFs (for research papers etc. and (maybe) take notes so the Iliad is the only game in town right now....but repeatedly passing by the Sony PRS505 in shops has been diffcult (cheap, instant gratification option)!!

Anywho...hello all.

Welcome. I have a Sony PRS 505 and also a Kindle -- both for recreational reading. I'm planning on buying an ultra-small laptop on which to read the technical PDF files used in my job. I haven't seen a suitable eInk device for reading the PDFs that have been formatted for A4 ("Letter" in the USA) paper. Given that they can't be resized, it seems obvious to me that PDFs were really intended to be printed rather than read on a screen.

But back to the Sony. Go for it! There are so many good books about -- particularly here at MobileRead. Even if you don't use it to read the research papers it's still a good thing to own an electronic book reader.

Welcome to the Forum. Are eBooks popular in Ireland?

I'm not really sure! But...the PRS505 is the first ereader to be available in stores (only two weeks ago) and has been sold out since day one. In fact, I heard that every single unit in my local sony store was sold before it hit the shelves. So there seems to be a good level of interest!

PRS Go for it!
Well, after drooling for a couple of weeks over it, I am now in the process of moving in with my girlfriend, so spare cash is no longer spare In the next few months I'll watch what IREX does and maybe we'll see a price for the plastic logic reader.

Thing is, I can't justify buying a reader that doesn't suit for work. And I'm one of those people who does get massive headaches reading on a screen all day. So if I see a bigger screen Iliad announced tomorrow...I might just have no choice but to go for that...for work, of course.

...and if I can read all of my non-work books on it too....well, that's a sacrifice I'm, willing to make

Good luck with whatever you decide on. And be sure and let us know how it works out for you.

Doesn't paying 1 rent instead of two free up some spare change?

I suspect that the "moving in" will result in many more lifestyle changes. It's likely that the girlfriend will want to have a place with nice furniture instead of the typical bachelor spartan approach. And will probably want to eat nice meals (at home or in a restaurant) instead of take-away. Maybe the new flat is further from work, thus increasing the cost of commuting.

I'd guess that many of these changes will come with a price tag.

But, if Smirksalot can convince his employer to spring for the reader *for work*, then of course he wins.

Here in the USA, there are laws that an employer must make reasonable accommodations for physical disabilities. Maybe you can convince your doctor or ophthalmologist to document that the typical back-lit screen is causing your headaches and recommend an eInk screen.
