The Kindle's biggest flaw is that it does not handle ePub. So correcting that flaw along with doing away with the forced margins would make the Kindle a better Reader. I also think it would sell better too.

I did buy a nook as a backup Reader.

Are you saying you would not like the addition of ePub and the ability to set the margins as you (or the eBook) wants instead of how Amazon wants?

just by the ol eink one, and then a fire (or some similar tablet) and be done... just carry them together in the same bag and you have the best of both worlds.

Apart from the fact that epubs can be read on most devices I fail to see what's so great about them as apposed to mobi. As well as my paperwhite I have a nook and a kobo and my first reader was a Sony. In all these years I've never seen what the big fuss is over ePub apart from the fact that they can be read on more devices.

The big fuss about ePub over Mobi is that ePub is an open format (a ZIP archive), has CSS, font and drop cap support and is generally considered better. Your ePub needs to be very basic in order for any software to convert it properly, and even then you can expect random margins for paragraphs (WTH, Amazon!).

I must respectfully disagree. I've converted literally hundreds of ePub books to KF8 and the overwhelming majority convert flawlessly.

Amazon may be many things, but nobody's ever accused them of not having a sound business head on their shoulders. Adopting the ePub format would be an idiotic thing for them to do. It'll never happen.

KF8 is a different story. From what I read, KF8 is basically an ePub 3 in a wrapper. So then why don't they just simply support the "vanilla" ePub 3 then? Why convert it? It's like if you buy an iPod-like device that only supports AAC and all of your music is in MP3, and then you need to convert everything to that supported format.

But I wasn't talking about KF8. I was talking about Mobi. Mobi (the only available format for all Kindles released before the Paperwhite) is severely limited when compared to ePub 2.1.

Kindle 3 and newer Kindle models all support KF8
