Yes. He slapped those blind Bantus right in the face... with intent and malice aforethought.

I don't see the audiobook as hypocrisy. I see it as an indication that his decision to not publish in e-format isn't quite the deliberate disregard for accessibility issues that some people are trying to make it out to be.

I'd have to go back through the thread to see if anyone was really concerned about that, but I didn't pay any heed to comments about accessibility. There was never any doubt in my mind that it would be available through various adaptive means as books have for decades before Kindle and Nook and Audible.

In fact, in the "blind Bantu" stuff above, I wasn't thinking in terms of accessibility. I just read "braille-Swahili" as a stand in for "someone's format of choice."

I thought it was clear that King was speaking of the recreational, voluntary ebook consumer.

I just wanted to say that I'm enjoying the heck out of this book, already 80 pages in. The trade paper back is a nice book too. It's comfortable to hold, much more so than a mass market and the print is a nice size too and easy on the eyes. It looks nice on the shelf too with my other Stephen King books. I'm glad I bought it!

Has anyone mentioned that King released an eBook-only novella way back in Y2K?

I thus suspect his attachment is not to paper, but to experimental marketing.

I don't know much about Mr. King. But in literary history, experimentally-minded prolific authors sometimes will publish a book under a pseudonym. This can help them see if they are merely cruising on their reputation. Stephen King fans may want to be alert for this.

I listened to a podcast of an interview with the publisher. Basically he missed the cheap pulp fiction paperbacks they used to sell in grocery stores with the campy covers. He decided to try bringing them back and had some success. He wrote a letter to Stephen King's agent asking if he would consider writing a blurb for one of the covers. His agent contacted him and said he wasn't interested in writing a blurb because he wanted to write a book instead. The publisher said that with his other books he does also provide ebooks but Mr King wanted to only do a paper version and he was supporting the decision.

I don't have a problem with him promoting pulp fiction and marketing it, but when you take your personal taste and tell your readers that this is how you have to consume it, then you're an idiot. I would say the same thing about someone that really liked ebooks and told their readers to buy it online and get over their paper fetish. If it's an economic reason then OK, otherwise the reader's preference is the correct choice.

He also wrote a novella that was only available for the Kindle. In fact, it was about a Kindle. A very special Kindle. A mysterious pink Kindle.

I will be buying the book tonight. Most of my reading is done on my ereaders. However, I still buy the odd paper book here and there. And this reminds me of my childhood and teen years, being all excited to dig into my latest purchase. ( I was a boring, nerdy teenager, lol). I read a good amount of Stephen King back then too.

No e-book edition for new Stephen King thriller

I really hope it gets released in ebook form. I'm pretty surprised at his decision. He released several of his works exclusively as ebooks and some exclusively for the Kindle only so I'm positive that it's going to be e-published eventually.

He probably means that there are freaks out there who scan the paper version, OCR it, and make an eBook out of it, and then spread it on the 'net.

I'd not even *think* about putting the time into that. I've "recreated" an eBook from such a source. It took me many hours, even though I didn't have to do the OCR. It was a 1200 page book of which there is no ebook version; I already have the hardcover. I won't do such a thing ever again, let alone even having to OCR it *shudder*. I'd rather just buy the hardcover.
