I really wasn't unhappy with TOR until I read they're thinking in terms of 6 months to a year for ebooks to be released. Which means who knows how long for specific titles. Well, pffft, I hope my library gets a copy of "The Well of Ascension: Book Two of Mistborn" in sometime soon, 'cause I'm not buying anything in paperback any longer.

That's a silly notion. Amazon doesn't have to let potential clients know competition exists. Nor is Goodkind a mewling baby incapable of research. The competition in this case could have approached him. What Amazon did is fair and this example doesn't support the notion that Amazon is a monopoly.

Goodkind's decision is unfortunate and unpopular with the general ebook community but to cite it as an example of Amazon being a monopoly is outrageous.

It would then be a mobi book and non-kindle devices can read mobi.

At this point, I think Amazon could quite safely sell "general" Mobipocket e-books alongside Kindle Edition e-books and not lose anything. They aren't really about selling Kindles anyway, they are about selling content. People who'd buy a Kindle today would be the same people buying a Kindle even if Amazon sold "other" formats.

Well, no ... it would be an .AZW or topaz book and non-Kindle devices don't read those. As people have noted .... you can't buy a "Kindle" book without owning a Kindle. You can certainly purchase mobi books, where ever they are sold, without owning a Kindle.

Amazon no longer sells books that are just mobi format ... they also have DRM, which is what actually makes them Kindle books in the true sense of the word.

And, you edited your comment, so I'll edit mine. Yes, they probably could sell mobi format books and not lose a thing. And, who knows ... that might happen in the future. At the moment, and less than a year into marketing, I don't think it's going to happen really soon. But, you are certainly correct with regard to me. I would have purchased my Kindle regardless of the great format wars.

Mobipocket books can be sold, and most often are, with DRM. I think the general point, is that Amazon could sell "kindle" books for people who have Mobipocket Reader installed on their PC, vs. only to Kindle owners. They don't, because of the dedrm tools and conversion tools that would then let evil pirates (gasp!) read the books on their Sony Reader or Cybook.

My point is, they probably wouldn't lose a single Kindle sale if they did, and they would defintely gain more book sales.

I agree. If I ran the company, that's what would be done. But, I don't feel screwed by Sony when a book is only available in lrf format ... so I guess I don't see why others should feel screwed by Amazon just because a book is only available in azw format.

Or maybe I'm just missing some part of the picture?? Is it possible to convert lrf easily into mobi format??

And, would these be the mobi with drm that I can't actually read on my Kindle??

Given that azw is just mobi with a particular type of drm attached to it .... again, why would Amazon sell it to someone who doesn't own a Kindle, given that the only way it would be useful would be if the purchaser stripped off the drm??

Heck no, you can't convert LRF to anything. Sony exclusivity is a worse idea than Kindle exclusivity.

Yeah .... I know, I know ... the threads did get a little combined. I think it was someone else that mentioned being screwed by Amazon (the company).

And as far as the "screwed by TOR" feeling goes, I'm with you there. Again, for me the feeling of being screwed by TOR stems mostly from being offered free parts of a series in an ebook format when they do not intend to make the rest of the series available in that same format in any predictable time frame. That really pisses me off .... in a very tangible way.

As far as being screwed by Amazons (the female tribal group), I remember reading somewhere that the males did not survive long past coitus. That, and that the women all cut their left breasts off to keep them from getting in the way of being able to shoot a bow and arrow properly (which assumes that they were all right handed, I suppose, otherwise ... it would be the right breast that would be unnecessary). I know you tend to be attached to geeky girls .... but are they generally uniboobed as well??

But did you get my point about Mobipocket Software? It supports DRM. So for me, I think Amazon could sell a "Kindle" edition to people who download and install a "kindle" software client. That satisfies publishers who want DRM. Amazon gets more book sales. Do they lose a Kindle sale? I argue not. Because people who want a Kindle will buy a Kindle, and the people who install the hypothetical Mobipocket/Kindle Reader software, do so because they've already chosen NOT to buy a Kindle.

I think we all agree in principle, yes? So let's move on to the next item on the agenda.

Rock Badgers. Inherently evil? Can they co-exist with llamas? Are they just surly, diminutive, angry pandas? Do they piss you off as much as TOR's e-book promotion?
