I found it!
I had one of these when I was a kid. Was thinking about it yesterday in conjunction with some memoir work I'm writing. I was thrilled until I read that Rush Limburger had one as a kid too.
![]() ![]() In 1962 Remco Toys of Newark, New Jersey got into the act with their Caravelle combination AM radio receiver and transmitter. This simple to assemble kit came supplied with a microphone and Morse code key. Powered by a single 9 volt battery the Caravelle with its integrated 3 foot antenna could be heard on nearby AM radios. It's interesting to note that radio personality Rush Limbaugh owned one of these during his youth, perhaps serving as the inspiration for him pursuing a career in broadcasting later in his adult years. I remember that -- well, the B&W television commercials for it. Very high tech!

Thanks for remembering. I think this toy was a big trigger leading to my eventual Electrical Engineering Degree.
Glad I took the left branch of the path rather than the right as Rush did. ![]() |

They never convinced me those would work, wasn't spending my good money on fakery. Radio waves and analog computers were real.

I remember those meter-based analog computers, but even then I went digital. I was the first (and, I'm pretty sure, only) kid on my block to have a Digi-Comp 1.

I wasn't so high tech...
![]() When I moved to Japan 25 years ago, these were still being used in banks and post offices, and lots of Mom&Pop grocery stores. Stitchawl |

I used a slide rule my first year of college.... scientific calculators were just coming out but cost more than computers today.

K+E had a big facility not far from my home back in the 60s -- I still have a warm spot in my heart for slide rules, kennyc. I've still got one. I had fun showing it to the kids when they were in high school.
When I was 6, in first grade, we used an abacus in class to help learn beginning math concepts, Stitchawl -- I remember it helping. I was surprised when my kids' started school and they didn't use them. So, I went out and bought one. Just a plastic one, but it got the concepts across. It was especially good at demonstrating simple multiplication. |

I'm outdone here. I had to take my shoes off to count any higher than 10.
