Take the train. Four hours for reading is good. For me, that would be four hours to play board games on the iPad. I love me some Ra, puerto Rico, Catan, Dominion, and the like.

95% of it tastes just like Japanese food... There is a major chain called "Osho" that is found all over Japan, and sells what 'they' say is Chinese food. The only things that are the same are the names and the main ingredients. They use Japanese soy sauce (which tastes NOTHING like either Chinese light or dark soy) almost no ginger or garlic (though that is changing in recent years) almost no sesame oil, and everything gets a thick 'sauce' of cornstarch (water chestnut powder) and water to finish the dish.

Sweet and sour pork is neither sweet nor sour, just thick and gooey from the cornstarch

But... the Korean Gyoza (Chinese pot-stickers) are tasty, but lacking water chestnuts, chopped bamboo shoots, and tree ear fungus. They are just minced pork with some garlic... The shumai taste the same but are shaped differently. And you get better steamed buns in the 7-Eleven, but those are pizza flavored, curry flavored, or pork with NO flavor...

Sounds like Chinese food in the US. Most of it isn't close to what it is in China. My hubby has gone looking for more authentic recipes to cook at home and it is amazing how different it tastes from the typical restaurant fare. We do have some really good Thai places but you have to search for them.

I enjoyed the Chinese food I got in LA but then my uncle is in the area where a lot of Asians are.

If you know the right place to go the Chinese food can be excellent. Most people buy Americanized versions of Chinese food and have no clue how far off it is from the real thing.

I got to the pool this afternoon and saw a man I see on occasion; he tends to be mid-afternoon and I'm more late afternoon, usually. He caught my eye so I said hello (this is New England, people aren't that friendly), and then he approached me. He had a complaint: he doesn't like my sunscreen.

I was flabbergasted. It's an outdoor pool, y'know, and people wear sunscreen. Moreover, I don't swim in a slick of it--I apply it very lightly, using less than my pale skin and heavily freckled arms and back warrant. It's also a big pool--50 yards wide and some 200 yards long and 10 feet deep, so any that washes off me must dissipate quickly. And he swims faster than I do, so even when we're in adjacent lanes, we're hardly swimming in tandem.

I have to take him at his word, so obviously he's very sensitive to certain chemicals and my use of sunscreen interferes with his enjoyment of his swim. What I don't get, though, is what he expects of me. Not to swim when he's there? Or forego a product that might keep me from a deadly disease in the future, rather than spoil his swim now?

You may be more sensitive and considerate than I am, but, unless you're slathering yourself in something truly disgusting, I'd be inclined to ignore him.

If it is HIS pool, then OK - risk the burn, or swim in your own pool. If not then he has the problem, you must not be the only one swimming with sunscreen on?

Thank you all! I was really taken aback.

Just for the record, I spray my back and shoulders lightly with sunscreen, as I figure the other bits are mostly under water and I'm there for only an hour. He's got a deep tan, something I'd achieve only if the freckles all merged.

I would ask him if he expects you to risk cancer. Ok, so I would do softer asking hi if he would be providing me with an alternative brand that was equally effective.

Being in the water increases your likelihood of burning. The suns rays are intensified by the water. You should be putting on more and letting it set for 30 minutes before swimming.

Seriously, if he did not offer an alternative or explain what the problem is then I would carry on with what you are doing.
