I managed to make my Kindle Touch jump chapters once, accidentally, and have never figured out how I did it. It must be a multi finger gesture, I was picking the Touch up when it happened.

I've used my Touch in the rain and unprotected. Here's the thing: the rain won't hurt it unless it gets deep inside the case. If it's raining hard enough for water to seep inside, the screen will end up being obscured by raindrops anyhow. So you couldn't read even with a cover.

Water inside these devices is also easy to deal with. Remove all power sources and let it dry completely. Yes, that includes removing the battery. The reason is that water doesn't damage the electronics, electricity does. Water simply provides a way for electricity to go where it isn't supposed to. When the water is gone, everything returns to normal -- assuming nothing was damaged when the circuits were powered.

It's not a straightforward as you make it sound. Firstly, most modern readers don't have easily-accessible batteries. In some devices, the battery physically can't be removed, because it's glued in place. And secondly, the damage normally does occur when the device is powered on because, if you're actually using the device in the rain, that's exactly what's going to happen!

Truth. Electrons move faster than you.

Most phones die from being dropped in the toilet.

Mine old flip phone died from being in the washing machine.

My old phone survived being dropped in the toilet twice and once in a pond - you got to love kids, it got killed by a puddle with less that 5mm of water and yes that one was my fault.
I would never use my kindle in the rain tho, the risk isnt worth it.

thank you very much for all of your replies and sorry for the late respond (got an accident and hurt my back)

I use a kobo wifi (no touch screen). Right now, most of my reading time is when I am walking outside (but luckily there is not much rain here).

I did some search for related words, interestingly googling "waterproof kobo" resulted with this thread as the fifth. Amazon and ebay selled a few things for 10$ - 25$ (including delivery). The better ones are a bit too expensive for a reader less than 80$ so I am more inclined to DIY.

I am thinking of a (double) DVD case, plastic tape over the button, with hard clear thing (I am not sure what) over the screen.

About mixing gadget with water, I accidently put the original head set for my iphone through a long wash in the washing machine and it still worked fine after that.

This was true, I got no problem with my fingers, however, walking to the computer, sitting down to a chair and standing up are all actual big big pain. Also, I had to spend a lot of time doing some "important" things such as changing from lying on my back to one side (took more than 15 min each try).

My nephew dropped his mother's BlackBerry into the bath. My uncle, who can usually fix such things was away for a few days. We rang him and he said don't try to dry it, remove the battery and put it into a glass of water until he got to look at it. It stayed in the glass of water for four days - he got there, pulled it apart, dried it with some sort of spray and a hairdryer, put it back together and it worked fine. He says that corrosion begins immediately and it should be kept wet and away from oxygen until it can be cleaned and dried properly. He is an electronic engineer.
