Here's another vote for A Confederacy of Dunces. It has me laughing out loud every time. Everything is Illuminated does that also.

It's called Fair Use.

Reading a book doesn't infringe copyright either. It's copying it that does.

For science-fiction comedy fans out there:

I found Michael Rubens' The Sheriff of Yrnmeer humorous—but not gut-bustingly so.

Muddle Earth by John Brunner would tickle the funny-bone of anyone who laughed at The Hitchhiker's Guide.

Almost anything by Robert Rankin.

Changing Places by David Lodge has already been mentioned. I'd like to add Small World and The Writing Game by the same author.

I thought A Year in the Merde by Stephen Clarke was very funny, but maybe you must have lived in France to get the most out of it.

Many of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books are funny, especially the ones about Death, for example Hogfather and Reaper Man.

If you want something more literary, how about The Hippopotamus by Stephen Fry? Or Wilt by Tom Sharpe.

Arto Paasilinna is always good for a laugh, too.

I found that The Phule's Company Series by Robert Asprin was humorous, but got old after the first couple of books.

A couple I remember finding funny at the time:

Who Goes Here? By Bob Shaw
Who's Afraid of Beowulf by Tom Holt

It's quite a long time since I read them, so I'm not sure I'd still find them so funny (although the Bob Shaw still contains my absolute favourite method of FTL travel.)

Oh, I'd like to add that Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus! Trilogy had me in stitches at times. In fact, I might like to bump that up to my number one Funny Fiction spot.
