Library Folders - Duplicate Authors (, vs _) Since February

Since February 2012, a comma is used after the last name of the author, instead of an underline, resulting in duplicate folders.

The first such folder was dated February 7, 2012, so whichever the latest (or close to latest) version was on that date started using the comma. I don't update calibre every time there is a new version. Current version I have on Win XP is 0.8.44, and new authors purchased today were saved with the comma. Existing authors in the library were saved with the comma also, creating duplicate folders. ~~paw3pals~~ |

The folders are not duplicate, they will have different contents. If you want one folder per author, rename the author in calibre temporarily and then rename it back. The folders will be consolidated automatically.

Or use the "Quality Check" plugin and use the "Check and rename book paths" option I put in the 1.7.2 release a while ago.

Thanx for such a quick response! Have consolidated them.

As I wish to have one folder per author, I assume that I will have to do this for every existing (underline instead of comma) author when a new book is added with their name. Fantastic program. ~~paw3pals~~ |

I have found that a trailing comma on an author name is automatically stripped off, so this should not have been causing duplicate authors as far as I can see.

If you use the plugin I mentioned above and run that menu item as a one off that is the *only* thing you need to do. It renames/consolidates *all* of your author folders to match the new naming standard that calibre has, so from an ongoing point of view there is nothing more to be done.

Where are these underlines and commas in the folders?

All the folders in my Calibre library have the authors names without underlines or commas. |

It only affects people who store their authors in LN, FN format or have other reasons for having a comma in the name like "Joe Bloggs, Jr". In earlier versions of calibre any commas would get converted to underscores when determining the author folder name on disk within the calibre library.

Kovid made a change a few months ago to now allow commas, which means if you subsequently added books for one of those existing authors you end up with two versions of the folder name internally in calibre's library - with "legacy" books in the folder with the underscore, and new books in the folder with the comma. It does zero harm, there is no duplication, but for the OCD types you can get to a single version of the author name folder by either using the plugin I mentioned above or as Kovid says temporarily renaming the author in calibre and then reverting it back. |

I didn't even have to do all that. All I did was highlight several books at once by the same author that were filed with the underscore. Selected edit metadata, and then entered the authors name from the list. Hit apply/ok and they were then filed with the comma. Carol |

While that makes sense, however, suppose you have HUNDREDS of authors, that's a LOT to go through. Kiwi's program does it in one snap. Thanks to the two of you, I was thinking on how do I do that because it is a little bit annoying to see many folders of the same author (and I know there's no duplicates, so that's a relief). |
