Until now, manufacturers have carefully avoided selling very large-screen ereaders (say, 10" or more), though several profitable markets can be envisaged (to name only one: universities!). Basically, this is due to a single reason: such a device would be too fragile (if weight -strongly connected with sturdiness- has to be kept reasonable).
I think (hope?) that if LG can make large versions of their flexible screen, finally someone will start selling really large ereaders. Even with my 9" device, reading a pdf with A4 or Letter page size is still awkward.

foldable and deformable are downsides when it comes to readability (text distortion, light issues as bent surface tends to cast shadow onto itself)

with books and magazines it's a necessity, but it does not improve readability

usually you would try to hold it as flat as possible, with thick books this sometimes requires a lot of effort, especially if it does not have generous inner borders

I want my future readers to be perfectly flat also. Durable yes, bendable no. The rollup reader in the video, definitely not for me. Not unless it's perfectly flat and rigid and sturdy once opened, and rolled up for transport only. But it looks wobbly in the video.

Maybe something that just folds in the middle like a real book, like a laptop /\. But it's got to be flatlocked once open. Just my opinion,.

If this catches on, people wont need to buy protective covers any longer. Or any cover for that matter.

People will want to pimp their e-readers no matter what. Covers that double as purses or hold credit cards, all different combinations will be a possibility.

True. But I for one will welcome the savings that not getting a cover will bring.

Ahh, so you didn't mean "poeple" won't need to buy covers, you meant "I" as in Tony won't need to buy covers. You don't need to do that today either, you want to.

No. I bought one in case I drop my reader out of the house. I usually do not use it in the house. I find that its more comfortable using the reader without it. People will not have to get protective covers with this new reader. Doesnt mean they wont. It looks light enough and flexable enough to be dropped without any major damge. Kind of like a plastic flexable folder.

But if people want their reader wrapped in a asthetically pleasing to them frilly cover that costs a quarter to the full price of the reader, thats great. I welcome the savings though of not getting one.

LG isn't making an ebook reader (as far as we know). It is making the display for an ebook reader, for some unknown third-party.

Hopefully we'll find out more in the next couple of months.

Wexler - a Russia based big OEM seller of computer stuff claim they will sell it in May 2012

Take the news with a grain of salt, they made announcements before - for December 2011 - and didn't produce the device.

My ideal reader using this tech would have the flex screen mounted on a not-flexible back (like a clipboard back). I'd like to have the durability & low weight, but for everyday use I'd prefer it kept rigid.
Best of both worlds.
Also, I agree with whoever said that if it isn't mounted on a stiff backing, the kids would soon fold it too much (it withstands 40 degrees of bend, but in an arc, not a sharp fold, I'm sure) and break it.
