Flexible display LG

LG unveils flexible plastic e-paper display, aims for European launch next month

LG has made no secret of its fondness for flexible e-paper, but those dreams became a reality today, with the announcement of a six-inch display that promises to "revolutionize the e-book market." The malleable plastic display sports a resolution of 1024 x 768 and can bend at an angle of up to 40 degrees. At just 0.7 millimeters thick, it's about one-third thinner than similarly-specced glass displays, and weighs in at 14 grams -- about half the weight of its glassy competition. LG also claims that the display is super durable, as evidenced by a series of successful drop tests from a height of 1.5 meters. The plan going forward is to supply the display to ODMs in China, in the hopes of bringing final products to Europe by "the beginning of next month." For more details, check out the full press release after the break.
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/29/lg-flexible-e-paper-display-launch

From the press release:
Quote:
Compared to glass EPD of the same size and resolution, LG Display's plastic EPD realizes a super slim thickness of 0.7mm which is 1/3 slimmer than existing glass EPD; as well as a weight of 14g which is more than 1/2 lighter.
This means E-Readers could possibly be 14g lighter and 0,35mm thinner.

Better resolution than E-Ink displays. What about the contrast differences? Do you have any informations?

I have it on good authority that Gumby has a keen interest in this project.

I don't want the device where I can actually bend the display like the guy in the picture.

But the extra durability is of course a great thing, no more broken glass substrate...

The world's first mass-produced plastic EPD from LG Display will first be supplied to ODM companies in China, followed by completed products to be released in Europe at the beginning of next month.
I wonder which ebook device company is releasing this in Europe next month?

If LG can make enough of them, this could be "standard" in the next generation of devices from the big players (Amazon, B&N, Kobo) by next Christmas. Lighter and thinner and less prone to break is likely an unbeatable combination.

It is larger screen sizes that really need a flexible display, because the current glass screens break easily.

Agree with the sentiments above.

Flexibility? Meh.

Durability + Lighter = Good

Inexpensive (doubtful) = Better

In my case flexibility = good!

most likely iRiver since LG and iRiver have a joint venture to produce readers. The Story HD for instance used LGs metal foil "hd" display.

It could also be Sony though since LG produces Sony's displays

I think that a lot of the weight in the larger format E-ink readers is in the case, which has to be rigid enough to keep the glass from flexing. This display is not only lighter than the one with the glass substrate, it could also be used in a much lighter and more flexible case.
