A Suggestion about Calibre Update Notification
I read many post/request about update notification and also read requests about automatic updating. And I know why it should NOT be added. Who's gonna pay for around 80TB/month bandwidth.
But I've three suggestions today. And a Bug report. First, calibre has two types of Updates (if I'm not wrong, plz correct me if i'm wrong); Major (e.g.: 0.1.0, or 0.2.0 etc) and Minor (e.g.: 0.1.1, 0.1.2....) {I'm waiting for SUPER MAJOR Update 1.0.0 Lolz}. Is it possible to add these options in preference- Update Notification options- (radio button) Notify me only about Major Updates (radio button) Do Not Notify Me about any Updates (radio button) Notify me about all updates {Please click apply button on the top left corner of this window to save ur preferences} Now, Bug report: In my calibre "Show notification when calibre update is available" is not checked (see attachment plz) but still I'm getting update notification (plz see attachment) Second, As I said, I read many post about automatic update and the answer was "If you are happy with how calibre works turn off the update notification (http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq.html#why-doesn-t-app-have-an-automatic-update)". that's ok, but i think there should be one more line after this, like-"Please click on the Preferences button in calibre main iterface, thn click on Behaviour button under the Interface category, thn uncheck the "Show notification when calibre update is available" OR implement my first suggestion. Guys, not everyone is a computer geek, and that's why user guide should contain more information (I searched the word "update" in the user guide and there was only one hit...). Look, turning off update notification is really important for those people who panic when they see a "red line" under the calibre interface. Here comes my third suggestion- I think changing the color of "update found" (changing it from RED to Blue/Green, same as notified version number) will help some people from being panicked. Cause we usually think red means "Error". Changing it to green will have a friendly meaning "you have green light to update"..!!! I believe if u (Honorable Mr. Kovid G.) change the "update found" color to a soft color (best option Black), people will reduce requesting for automatic update option. Calibre rockz in every ways. thanks kovid & thanks to everyone who is working for calibre. |

There is a check box to turn off the update notification, on the update notification. It doesn't get simpler than that. And turning off the update notification turns off ONLY the popup message, not the line in the statusbar. That cannot be turned off and it is not going to be turned off. There needs to be an indication that calibre is not running the latest code so that people have a chance to update before opening redundant bug reports.
I like the idea of making it gree instead of red, will be in the next update ![]() |

Another suggestion for bandwidth, incremental updates, rather than re-install over, as an awful lot must be libraries and runtime files that don't change. There's probably some flaw in that, such as making uninstall difficult, or needing double the work to prepare.

Well, as previous two comments were about bandwidth load. May I suggest to use torrent? I saw some company provide their software by both direct link and torrent. It will reduce load on calibre sever and I'll be happy to seed it 1:1000 at least. (that means I'll download once and I'll upload 1000 times or more) Right now I'v around 30GB torrent files in my utorrent seeding and leeching, comparing to that seeding calibre is easy task.

![]() ![]() There are users in many places in the world that have severe limits (or it gets expensive FAST) for larger downloads. |
