I just tried and it worked fine for me (fw 1.9.17 with Calibre v0.8.41), downloaded the epub from from calibre content server page and then hit the home button and then opened the book, no reboot here.

My test was with a very small book (100k), I'll give it a try with something larger later and see if I can reproduce your reboot issue.

Just tried again, this time with a 13Meg PDF file and had the KT locked up and then rebooted on me as soon as the download was done, the book is there after the reboot. Definitely something got messed up with the browser in FW 1.9.17

Tried doing some more testing but this time just trying to load the Calibre page in the KT browser was causing it to reboot.

(For what it's worth: I've rarely had problems with my Touch. When I have, they are my fault: such as improperly rooting the Touch.)
I'm sort of new, and having many troubles but only since last firmware upgrade on my KoboTouch. Would you or someone mind explaining what 'improperly rooting the Touch' means?

Beware though, it will wipe your reading life & statistics (gained awards are kept) and all sideloaded (non Kobo kepub) books from internal memory.

After doing a factory reset, all of my problems were gone, and I have been using my KT (1.9.16 and now 1.9.17) without any problems.
I tried that, it was the first 'fix' I tried. Thank you for the suggestion.

I've actually done it 2 different times now. Still getting database error when making more than 1 change at a time on my KT.

As I've spent so much time trying to read around the forums, I wonder would something like the suggestions in this thread help?
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94789

I'm not sure what 'Sqlite database replacement' fixes, it's not really clear to me.

And, I was also having trouble with the clock, but since my last attempt at fixing some of these bugs [or should I say troubleshooting], my clock finally set to the right time, and now it seems to be holding steady. Hooray for small victories!

Ditto. And the same for all the little awards Kobo shoves at us. Reading is its own reward. I find those congratulations messages annoying and intrusive - like someone is constantly looking over my shoulder.

I assume you realize that on the Kobo Touch you can go into the settings and under Reading Life uncheck either Reading Life as a whole or (I assume since I have reading life as a whole off so the option is greyed out on mine) turn off the notifications. If you're reading on the I-pad or other devices I'm not sure if they are as easy to turn off.
Personally I have no use for Reading Life or the Facebook functionality, but as long as I can turn them off I realize there are people that love both of them and Kobo can use that as a marketing gimmick (which if it results in higher sales means more chance of Kobo being around and more resources for firmware development so I can live with it).

Ok I am now 100% dissatisfied with this product. DO NOT BUY THIS GARBAGE.

I was shipped the new in a box model with firmware 1.9.13 as the default firmware. This thing is a total POS. I regret updating my first reader past 1.9.8. To make things even worse I am forced to update the firmware right away so I can't try the 1.9.13 version it pushes me to 1.9.17. And they took down the pages were we could manually download the firmware so I cannot download 1.9.14 which I would rather have compared to this new 1.9.17.

Currently I experience:

Device resets during content processing.
Device will not save any data into kobo.sql under content. The only information listed is the "recommended" garbage and two books that were free that I downloaded from the kobo store.
Side loading will not work content processing resets before reaching 100%.

What I have tried:
I have attempted to load files one by one.
Reformatted the SD cards I have tried.
Renamed all files.
Tried making my own PDF content and nothing loads.
Tried placing one file into the Kobo memory and it doesn't even detect anything.
Factory reset.
Hard resets.
Tried using different computers.
Different software. (Kobo Desktop, Calibre)
Tried loading Txt files.

I am infuriated.

After upgrade, the problem with double page turns was replaced with the problem with dead taps. Tried two times, including fresh upgrade after factory reset. Also have the issue with very small top margin for some epubs, but that's not so critical.

A lot of time wasted trying to work out the problems with a few latest versions of FW. Very disappointed, going to downgrade to 1.9.12 or 1.9.14

Yep, I have to agree... having a terrible time with dead taps after upgrading to 1.9.17

Tried a factory reset and then reloaded a few books. Dead taps every few pages. Very. Annoying.

Will probably try to go back to 1.9.16

I have made small modifications to the Touch's software that allows me to poke around the Touch's software and run my own software. This isn't supported by Kobo, and can result in it becoming unusable if it is done the wrong way.

1.9.17 is working nicely for me. Haven't even seen the dreaded double-tap problem so far. Unfortunately, the firmware is still finicky about microsd cards.

Bought one of these for my wife who was having sleeping problems so we thought to try an e-ink device rather than her (much more powerful, polished and flexible) backlit Nook Color with CM7.

We are also seeing the KT 1.9.17 rebooting the device after using teh browser to access the calibre content server. I actually find the browser very susceptible to rebooting the device on many web pages.

If you just browse to http://<calibre-server>:8080 you will get the mobile version. If you want to see the full blown server with all the book info, rating etc. browse to http://<calibre-server>:8080/browse

Does the kobo app support OPDS catalogs (http://<calibre-server>:8080/opds) from inside the app? It'd be really nice to download books directly from the OPDS catalogs without having to use the flaky browser. This is becoming a pretty common feature in many ebook reading applications so it would be nice for Kobo to keep up with the competition here.

In the meantime, she's back to plugging the KT in to her laptop and using calibre to transfer books rather than doing it wirelessly like she's used to with her Nook Color.

I haven't been round these boards much for ages as I've been happy with my KT.

But the upgrade to 1.9.17 has me annoyed (again). Like others here I have gone from no problems, to problems, to no problems back to problems again, depending on the upgrades (remember the constant factory reset issue?).

I now have no top margins on side loaded epubs - and these are Overdrive library books so I do not run them through calibre. It definitely makes it harder to read as the top line gets shaded in low light. And I seem to have far more dead taps - on the right hand side anyway. Just annoying things that make me look at my husband's kindle touch with a little envy - he NEVER has ANY problems with his kindle.

I would have thought the margin issue would be picked up in testing as side loading epubs via ADE is so common. And it isn't just the odd one doing this, it is most of them. Bad luck for me, or not focusing on their knitting for kobo?

Having just switched books, I'm finding the Kobo to be all around more responsive and nimble with the current Kobo ePub I'm reading than it was with the side-loaded ePub (reformatted for Kobo en route via Calibre) I recently finished. Double-taps (dead taps) seem largely a non-issue.

I can't help but wonder if there's a slight disconnect when it comes to the Touch's touchscreen IR-grid and the smaller margins and less regimented page and chapter breaks I see in pretty much all side-loaded books.

Same here - never had that problem before, but have it now. Especially towards the lower right corner...

I upgraded and so far have encoutered no problem. The .16's problems seem to be fixed for me (no more dead tap ou double tap, no more blurred text when calling on the dictionnary). I don't find it more responsive, but, no doubt being my first ereader, I didn't find it lack speed when page turning. One thing's for sure, I read faster on my reader than on paper books, don't know why but it's a fact...
