A
Snakes? I think they are important in connection with Wicca, but I'm struggling otherwise. D Monstrous heads = the Seven-headed Hydra. Sin = Seven deadly sins. Resting = Seven sleepers of Ephesus - a Rip Van Winkle sort of story I seem to remember. |

D - hydra is correct. 7 deadly sins correct. Seven sleepers of Ephesus is correct. It's actually that Islam has seven heavens and seven earths, but you are close enough. |

Seven sheaves of corn: Pharaoh's dream as interpreted by Joseph.
A: The link is a spiral, I think. Aristotle wrote about shelled creatures. Slinkies are coiled springs. Mosquito repellents in the form of a coil. Bell towers have spiral staircases. Don't know about Wicca, unless labyrinths are involved in worship. Edited to add details when I'd finished my coffee. ![]() Last edited by Shayne Parkinson; 03-20-2012 at 03:45 PM. |

B.
"A Whistling Woman" by A S Byatt. Can't lay my hands on my copy for some reason but I know there was a study being made of snails out on a moor or heath. |

Sorry, missed it. Did you update your original post afterwards? All correct apart from the Aristotle and Wicca references.
The answers are now: A. Link = Spirals (Shayne). Aristotle; the goddess Wicca; something slinky = slinky is a metal spiral (Shayne); mosquito repellant = repellents in the form of a spiral (Shayne); the route to a bell tower = a spiral (Shayne) B. Link = Snails (issybird) Dancing too slowly for the quadrille = "Will you walk a little faster said a whiting to a snail" - Alice in Wonderland (pdurrant); a whistling woman = "A Whistling Woman" by AS Byatt, in which there was a study of snails (Bookpossum); the tails of young dogs = Snips and snails and puppy dog tails (issybird); Stephen Jay Gould = researched snails (issybird); postage stamps = snail mail (issybird) C. Link = Joy (issybird) Yiddish = Leo Rosten wrote 'The Joy of Yiddish' (issybird); Beethoven = 'Ode to Joy'(Bilbo); sex = 'The Joy of Sex'(Bilbo); Amy Tan = 'The Joy Luck Club'(Bilbo); Wordsworth = Surprised by Joy (issybird); Leaders of Men D. Link = Seven (issybird) Enid Blyton = Secret Seven (Bilbo); sheafs of corn; heaven and earth = Islam has seven heavens and seven earths (Bookpossum); monstrous heads = the Seven-headed Hydra (Bookpossum); sin = Seven deadly sins (Bookpossum); resting = Seven sleepers of Ephesus (Bookpossum); managerial competencies = Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Bilbo); marital strife = seven year itch (issybird); God = God rested on the seventh day (issybird, sort of...) So the ones in bold are the only ones left. I'll post the answers and the winner soon. |

The missing ones were that Aristotle devised spiral geometry, the godess Wicca is worshipped with spirals, and "Leaders of Men" was a hit by Joy Division.
