And Giggles...? Did you just raise your voice in anger (all caps)? I think that's the first time I've ever seen you react even slightly emotionally to a lowly human's posts. There's hope for you yet. Cast off that yoke of idealistic, pie-in-the-sky, slacker-hipster servitude! There is no Matrix, Neo. Time to wake up and put on a tie.

You know, I hadn't even read your post when I posted the Quote from Matrix. I guess I'll have to change the Quote to something from The Terminator .

Authors definitely need to eat, just like farmers. But it seems that the copyright system is built as a protection against those who would take advantage of anothers work. In other words, it is curing the symptom, not the disease. The disease being the meme consisting of the idea that it is ok to reward yourself financially from anothers work.

By taking away the possibility of selling, the meme would eventually die.
What would die would be books. The problem that copyright was designed to solve was that publishers were printing books without paying the author. Without the ability to make a living from writing, people have little incentive to write, and have little time to do so in any case.

You say that authors and farmers have to eat, but you would deprive them of that. The ability of authors to charge for their work is not a disease.

If you want to create a world where robots do everything for us, go ahead and create the robots and then we'll talk. I suspect that someone else will be expected to create the robots, and then give them away for nothing.

You build technician robots. The thing is, things break in such unpredictable ways, that a technician robot would be stumped. I suppose you could just scrap them and build new robots. But someone has to run the mines and run the factories, run the scrapyards and distribute the robots. I suppose we could sit around watching TV all day, but that is work too, so robots would write, produce and star in all the TV productions. Will everything be done by robots?

And if it is... what will there be left to write about?

So instead of educating people on the problems caused by not compensating authors for their work, we decided to take the easy way out and implement a copyprotection scheme??

Its 2012 people, let's get this thing going.

The way I see it, I'm not paying for what the author physically produced, but I'm paying a meager fee for the time and effort the author took in creating something that entertained me for a while.

Not for the words on paper (or device as the case may be), but for the hours and hours he/she spent creating one of the best forms of entertainment for me.

So you think if people were educated about the problems of not compensating authors, they would voluntarily give a donation to the author, as if the author is a beggar with a bowl?

But we don't reward an author for the time and effort. We seldom know how much time or effort went into a book, we only know whether or not we like it. An author could spend years working on a book that no one likes, or quickly turn out a popular book. We reward the author on our enjoyment of the book.
