Not always, the new Star Trek movie is an example of a new timeline created (oops, almost gave something away - go watch it).

An early time travel book was "Lest Darkness Fall" by L. Sprague DeCamp where the protagonist deliberately tries to change the past and (again, go read it).

In the comics of the 60s, if he flew clockwise around the earth faster than light, he went one direction in time (whether future or past, I can't remember). Flying counter-clockwise reversed that direction.
