no LCD tablets, because I'm buying a reader for textbooks in PDF, battery life and no eye strain is important.

http://www.woot.com/Blog/ViewEntry.aspx?Id=20826 Woot has the KDX for $199 today. Just letting you know, in case that was what you were leaning towards.

Note that I am not recommending it because I haven't tried it out, so I have no idea what it is like.

I like how they add that it will be here by Christmas if ordered by noon

And they posted this;

Spoiler:
eReaders: they’re the hot new thing in books… for now.

It has a 9.7” screen capable of displaying graphic-rich books, PDFs, newspapers, magazines, and blogs but there’s no glare and minimal eye-strain thanks to E Ink Pearl technology. It’s only about 1/3 of an inch thick (as thin as most magazines) yet it can hold up to 3,500 books, many of which are free, and can be downloaded, without a PC, in a minute or less over the Free 3G Wireless.

With all this and more, the Kindle DX really takes the eReaders to a new level. In fact, it’s so advanced that it makes you wonder, what could the future of books possibly hold? Here are our predictions:

2012: Fear of the Mayan Apocalypse among librarians will lead to the first meteor-proof hardcover books. Of course, nothing will come of the predictions, and the resources used to build the books will be considered wasted.

2017: eReaders will come with built-in air conditioning for beach reading.

2023: The discovery that copies of The Bridges of Madison County can serve as alternative fuel source will end wars and save the environment.

2045: The development of the edible word will bring about a new breed of writers, renowned both for their way with words and their culinary prowess.

2092: A first edition copy of Huckleberry Finn brought to life through a series of laboratory mishaps will become the first book president of the United States of America.

2094: Under President Finn, books will be given the right to simply close/power off if they aren’t in the mood to be read.

3011: A rebel uprising will overthrow Former President/Current Evil Dictator Finn after the brutal 7-year Paper and Skin War.

3012: A closer reading of the Mayan prophecy will reveal that they meant

3012 all along. The world will end. All will be lost, aside from the above-mentioned meteor-proof books. They’ll be fine.

They messed up a bit with dates, Finn was president for 917 years I think they meant 2112.

Given his position, Finn will be the first to have access to the rejuvenation therapy that becomes available around 2100. So I guess the dates are OK.

This is really pissing me off, hundreds of new ultrabooks, tablets, phones, TVs and other many other useless repetitive blings at this year's CES.

And no one bothers to come up with a 9" Eink tablet to rival Kindle's DX? Why do all manufacturers think all consumer want is movies and games.

No matter how much I didn't want it to start off it, I eventually bought an iPad for reading pdfs. There's imply isn't an e-ink device that will do the job properly. So rather than being angry, you're just going to have to accept the state of affairs and made decisions accordingly.

I now love the opportunities that the iPad gives me for working with pdfs in different ways. There are great apps around for reading text books and academic literature. I recommend giving it a try.

Battery life is pretty good, btw, I can go two-three days without charging. While it's nothing compared to e-ink devices, it really isn't an issue just plugging it in over night.

I rather saw off my penis than buy a iPad.

If I am forced to use LCD based device I will get a professional looking tablet like the Thinkpad tablet. Or even better wait for the Windows 8 tablets to come out in Q3.

Well, I wasn't advocating an iPad in particular - the point is rather than there aren't good e-ink alternatives out there. I would have liked one, too, but I couldn't find anything that met my needs.
