Introduction of an eReader n00b

Hey there MobileRead Forums.

I'm new to the world of eReaders. I've been reading eBooks for years on my Laptop, because I *had* a laptop, but it's far from ideal for most reading situations.

I'm a mid-20s Graduate Student about to graduate in December. Reading fiction is one of my hobbies, but I also read things for work/school. Hmm, introductions... uh, I also like biking and eating delicious things?

At any rate, someone suggested I come here to get good information on eReaders. You guys have an amazing wiki, but it gave me more questions to ask than answers in the end. I'll have to make a thread in the "Which one should I buy?" sub-forum later.

But for now, could anyone direct me somewhere that would tell me what all eReaders are capable of? Until I got here I didn't know that some of them could be Rooted (I'm still not sure what that entails fully), I didn't know that some of the eInk options might have browsing capability somehow (how would that even work? I didn't think they did scrolling), people are talking about taking notes on them (again, a new concept), etc. What about organizing the couple hundred eBooks I have? Searching them? Til now I thought they just... let you read, and that was it.

I feel like I'm not sure what questions to ask. Because I'm only going to buy one of these things and I want to get it right the first time (b/c I'm unlikely to buy another til this one ceases working). All I know is that I don't want a tablet -- I want an eReader with excellent battery life. Some folks say that the Kindle and the Nook are more or less the same -- but then others say that all these "hidden" abilities (rooting, etc.) are quite different, so I'm not sure which it is.
