[GUI Plugin] Kindle Collections (old) - Page 92

I don't understand this plug in at all :/ I finally got the Manage collections to show up in the tool bar, but when I click it, I get this
"calibre, version 0.8.22
ERROR: Unhandled exception: <b>AttributeError</b>:'BooksModel' object has no attribute 'get_collections_with_ids'

Traceback (most recent call last):

Will you be getting any of the new kindles, I was just wondering since I am a little concerned the plugin might not work with either of them, the Touch in particular?

The plugin is Kindle Collections. The Manage collections entry in the toolbar list cannot be used with the Kindle.

I have the Kindle 4 non-touch and it works fine. The touch hasn't been released in the UK, and when/if it is I'm not sure if I'll get it.

So I have to create collections with the kindle out? I'm starting from scratch, I don't have any collections on my kindle now. I was hoping to skip having to type with the kindle keyboard.

You must attach the Kindle to your PC in order to use the plugin.

When looking for the icon on the toolbar, its called Kindle Collections. If it is not showing up on your calibre toolbar, then you need to go into preferences->toolbar and add it (I think you added Manage Collections to the toolbar by mistake - that icon/tool is only for non-Kindle devices).

You can definitely avoiding typing in your collections using the Kindle with this plugin

I am going to assume if the non-touch works fine than the touch should as well, which is good to know, I don't mind losing the copy covers plugin but to lose this one is a blow I am not ready for.

Hi,

I was having a bit of difficulty with this plugin, trying to use the option to create collections on the Kindle from the Calibre library, but I think I've worked-around it for now.

It's using my 4th Gen Kindle (the smaller one without the keyboard), along with a custom column in Calibre that I have called "Collection" containing comma separated values.

The issue seems to be that, even when I set the plugin to delete collections already on the Kindle, collections on the Kindle are staying. My work-around is to delete all 3 of the collections files in the Kindle's system folder. The only problem is that I lose collections for the few books that aren't in the Calibre library.

Is this a known problem or am I doing it wrong?

The only collection file the Kindle knows about is collections.json. Anything else is just a backup or temporary file from the plugin.

You say collections on the Kindle are not getting deleted? If you use Show Details when the plugin is done, does it list which collections are deleted/replaced correctly? If so, are you doing a Restart (not just a power off/on)?

Have you set the customization option to uncheck the box to preserve Kindle-Only collections? It might help to show your settings (in the Show Details report).

I hope this won't be too annoying, but I absolutely cannot get this to work and I need simple instructions.

I just today installed the plugin dated 11/6, but it is not showing up anywhere that I can find. I created a new column with lookup "kindlecollections" and column title "Collections" but it remains empty even with my KK attached. I tried to follow the instructions on page 1 of this thread but kept dead-ending when something the instructions said to click on wasn't there. I want to put my ebooks into collections manually, so I don't care about sorting or automatically putting them into collections, but I feel incredibly stupid!

I forgot to add I'm using 0.8.26 under Windows 7.

I found these instructions above:

When I went into preferences->toolbar and selected "the main toolbar when a device is connected" I finally found "Kindle Collections" as an option! Stand by to see if that worked.

Oh, my. What a lovely, lovely program. It pulled in my current collections and I selected a bunch of books and used the bulk-edit-metadata to add the collections I wanted them to go into. But when I checked on the KK itself, the books hadn't been moved into the new collections - how do I get that to happen?

In the previous post you mentioned you wanted to edit your collections manually, but this post indicates you want to manage them using calibre. Editing manually means using the Edit Collections option of the plugin to show a GUI that allows you to edit the collection names directly on the Kindle without using any information from calibre. I'm guessing you really do want to use calibre to manage your Kindle collections, but just want to enter specific collection names and not create them based on author or series, etc.

So if you've already imported your collections from the kindle to calibre and made changes to the column, what you need to do now is use the Customize Plugin option to select 'Create' next to your column name so that the plugin knows which column to use. Then you run the Preview Collections to show a report of what collections will be created. If it looks ok, you can run Create Collections to save them to your Kindle. Then you just need to Restart your Kindle so that it loads the information (Restart is not just power off/on - use menu->settings, menu->Restart).

[EDIT] If you have any books on your Kindle that are not in Calibre, then you will need to manually create separate collections for them on your Kindle. Or import them into calibre and assign them to a collection.

I'm having a problem getting the plug-in to work with my new Kindle Touch. I used to use it just fine with my older Kindles.

When I create a Collection on the Kindle itself it shows up on my screens. But when I plug it into my computer and use Calibre to Create Collects, then restart, the new Collections never show up at all.

If I plug it back into the computer and use Windows Explorer to look at the files there is a file collections.json that has a time stamp that looks like it should be the updated collections.

Yes, it doesn't appear to use that file at all. I created a bunch of collections on my kindle touch and took a quick look around the filesystem, but I couldn't find anything that looked likely to be the new collections file. Hopefully someone else can find it.

Creating and tagging collections is a LOT less painful on the touchscreen than it was using the horrible tiny keyboard, but using my computer is certainly easier yet.
