The only advantage of 3G not mentioned here is syncing across devices. If you read your wifi-only Kindle in an area without wifi, it won't sync with your phone, tablet, computer, car, pacemaker, etc. This is not a big deal if you only read on your Kindle, but if you switch devices, it's a pain if the aren't synced.
This was the primary reason I opted for the 3G. |

Since you seem to sell your readers, go with the cheapest.

I'd go with the wifi only model. If you have a smartphone, it can be used as a wifi hotspot. It currently works great with my nook color. I don't yet have an e-ink device but I want to believe it would work with any wireless device.

Hmm...maybe if I were to travel with multiple wifi-only devices to somewhere with no wifi...? I really think I'm missing something here. Maybe y'all read differently from me. ![]() |

You can tether very easily your phone if it's a smartphone with your kindle. I do that everytime I am away from a wifi spot. My phone becomes the wifi spot then, and it is very easy indeed. I then download the needed book or surf wherever I want.

I purchased a wi-fi only model only and regret it. If you forget to plan ahead and pre-load something you want to read, it's a frustrating limitation to have to wait for wi-fi access.

I was under the impression that the Kindle would only connect to "Infrastructure" wi-fi connections, which meant most phone hot-spots wouldn't work... what sort of phone do you have? Do you use a specific app to set up the connection?

I use a samsung galaxy ace and I don't need an app, the tethering function is under my settings menu.

I was on a business trip in Spain for 10 weeks earlier this year. The hotel had only wired internet, but I was able to get a 3g signal for my Kindle Keyboard 3g. The plant I where I was working also had a 3g signal for my Blackberry, but wasn't a place I wanted to take my Kindle if I wanted to keep it. So, I downloaded and installed the Kindle for Blackberry onto my phone. After that, I could read at the hotel and at the plant on separate devices without missing anything. It worked well enough to read the first three books of the Song of Ice and Fire series. Although, reading for extended periods of time on the tiny Blackberry screen is not a lot of fun. The ability to sync across devices really made me glad I paid the extra for 3g. |

If I had a smartphone with internet access I wouldn't have bought the 3G version.

I would be lost without the 3G. I don't have a smart phone and find it invaluable for checking the football results, share prices and even the odd email, although the last is a bit clumsy. Especially at work where there is no wifi.
