I feel your pain. I've been looking at the Fire again too. What concerns me most is that there's no SD card (I'm not fond of the idea of "cloud storage") and the 7" screen. I'd prefer a slightly larger display (8" to 9" would be ideal for me). The hardware does look good otherwise, though. I'll be interested in Fire owners' comments regarding limitations that Amazon has put on the device. It seems like it's designed primarily as an Amazon media-consumption tablet. Which actually may be fine for my needs. I'm not sure, as I'm still trying to define what I want a tablet to do.

There will be many other Android tablets coming out within the next few months and retailers probably will be discounting older devices since some of the new devices will have the latest Android 4.0 (dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich), so for now I'm taking a "wait and see" attitude. But the Fire is still very tempting!

For computers, Amazon's computer technical requirements are below. The Android tablets wouldn't meet those specs.
I really don't know the answer there. Maybe start a thread asking for people with different tablets and a Prime membership to try it out.

The specs on my TouchPad are: webOS; 9.7" 1024x768 IPS display; 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU; 1.0 GB RAM. My understanding is that the CPU is actually 1.5 GHz and that HP underclocked it. Soon, I think I'll do PreWare on it.

Tubemonkey, you said that you stream Prime videos on your TouchPad. I've been looking at tablets and I've also been considering Amazon Prime. Does anyone know where I can find out which tablets work with Amazon Prime streaming video? I'm so confused.
With regard to Android tablets, I don't see why any one device with Honeycomb (Android 3.x) wouldn't be able to stream Prime videos. The hardware is more than capable for that. If you have a decent web browser it shouldn't be a problem.

I have a Sony Table S and it streams flawlessly with Prime videos.

I don't have Amazon Prime, so I can't take the process "all the way," but here's how I access the Kindle Owners' Lending Library books on my K3 Kindle:
  • Press the Menu button
  • Select "Shop in Kindle Store"
  • Under Browse, select "See all"
  • Select "Kindle Owners' Lending Library"
It will then show all the books available. There is a symbol to the right of each book.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't be seeing this. Which Kindle device are you using, and what is your current version? (to check, press Menu, then select "Settings"; the version number is on the bottom). Mine is version 3.3, which is the latest for my device (K3 Keyboard 3G+wifi model). Are you in the U.S.?

Thanks so much to both of you! I don't have a smartphone and we only just recently got high-speed internet at our house, so Android and streaming video are completely new worlds to me! Amazon's technical requirements page for Prime videos has been no help at all. If I can find a tablet with a screen slightly larger than 7" that can stream Prime videos I will be one happy camper! I've been looking at tablets with HDMI out (which Kindle Fire doesn't have), thinking I could stream the videos onto my TV.

I realize that my question regarding tablets was slightly off-topic, so I will start another thread regarding that when I need more information.

Consider a Roku. It'll stream Amazon Instant Video (including Prime), Netflix, Hulu Plus, and many others to your TV.
