Stuff changes and not always for the better for everyone's needs. It's better for most but not for all. In your case it wasn't a better change. You have to work within the parameters of the device. Not the other way around. If the PDF format is so important to you then the wise thing would have been for you to wait to see how the device handled PDFs before buying. But you didn't. The previous Readers were able to handle several more formats than this one. They changed it. It's their device. They're allowed to. Whether it works for your needs is another story entirely. I'm bummed that they don't read Word Documents anymore but I have to deal with it. And life goes on..... |

That may not be the case, but it's perfectly understandable to think so -- Sony did not exactly advertise the new OS. For your average consumer electronics buyer there is no way to know that the old PRS-x50's ran a custom UI on Linux and the new one runs Android. Nor should it be. And while I agree that one cannot expect miracles from such a cheap device, I wouldn't blame the OP for his bad experience. He will likely choose a different company next time and the loss is Sony's, not his. Just my .02, Matthias, who likes his T1 just fine. |

I have to agree with MattW. For quite awhile there was even a question as to what OS the new T1 had, it wasn't easy to figure out at the time, so most buyers wouldn't have a clue was OS is on a reader since Sony didn't advertise it. And having an older generation reader from a company, I would expect at least the same level of capabilities for reading PDFs or any supported format in a new reader from the same company. If it's somehow a lesser quality, that's the company's fault, not the buyer's.

Your 950 works, so too does a good tablet. You can always take it back and ask for a refund if you dislike your T1 so much. |

I still have time to take it back, and I may do that, but I haven't yet decided. Maybe rooting it will help, but I need the time to try this out...

Well, Shopaholic, you do have a point that I could have waited more before buying, I do agree with you there. But I also have to agree with both Ripplinger and MattW, because I cannot compare the dropping of formats with improper support of another format. Kindle3 has poor support for PDF, which is why I won't buy any more such devices from Amazon. And I more wary with Sony due to this bad implementation, because I expected their previous level of excellence.
Question: Is Android known for bad PDF support? Sorry all if I appear miffed but it really, really is hard to find an all-around excellent device, though perhaps I should have investigated PB (though their screens are not Pearl, IIRC). |

I have yet to have come across an ereader that handles PDF in the manner that those who have PDF would like. It seems to be that there might be higher expectations than what these ereaders can produce. As stated earlier, these ereaders were not designed for PDF functionality as PDF, as stated, is not an ebook format. I see you have a 950 that you said you were happy with. If the T1 doesn't give you what you want, you could go back to using the 950.
As you have said, the kindle did not provide what you needed. I doubt if the nook or kobo would either. You indeed might have to look to larger tablets to do what you need. |

As far as PDF reflow mode was concerned I gave up on it when I found I could only page forward not backward. It's possible they fixed it in later models but I won't be spending any more money with them to find out. |

Thanks to all for your replies, and for bearing with my grouchiness on this topic. I guess my best hope for keeping the T1 is to try and root my device and see if ezPDF works any better. Though if anyone here knows, please post the results!

Ummm. I can page both forward and backwards on T1 pdfs. Haven't really figured out what slows down the reflow yet, as some pdfs seem to work just about instantly whereas others lag badly. And it doesn't seem to correlate with tagging or images as much as one might think.
