Now, folks, speaking of Sony products, I have found that there're virtually no books I can't get on my 505 between the snazzy eBook Applications firmware and my assortment of tools and thingamajigs (thanks to MobileRead, that kind of thing is available for anyone somewhat tech-savvy and willing to get their hands a wee bit dirty) - heck, even the dreaded scanned .pdf works OK enough under landscape mode. The way I knew Sony, they used to build some sturdy powerhouses with enough versatility for the kind of end-user that I am and that's made me buy, consider and suggest Sony products - such as cameras, TV sets, MP3 players or the little Japanese tank in the brown leatherette cover waiting patiently on my desk here, which I nailed second-hand at under 150 US bucks.
Living where I do, it's not easy to get one's hands on the latest gadgets (especially for a niche market that doesn't have a lot of support), but I did get the chance to fiddle with the T1, which I wanted to get as my next reader of choice. Now, I have played with touchscreen eInk devices and I have modded the bejeezus out of my Optimus One, so I figured I knew what to expect, but this doohickey here, well, aside from the crippled, albeit rootable Eclair, the nifty touchscreen and the comfy enough real buttons, let's just say it doesn't look to me like something I'd want to hold on to and treasure for several years to come. I just want a solid device that can display my books as usefully as can be; if it also comes with capabilities I'd like (unlike, say, the MP3 player on my 505), then I expect to be able to use them properly. Unfortunately, neither the rather glitchy T1 nor the still-immature Android OS can offer me that just yet - but, if Sony get their act together and come up with a rock-solid Android eInk reader / tablet contraption, I'll be sorely tempted to get it instead of, say, a Kindle or a Nook. (That is, unless Amazon or B&N pull it off before Sony do, of course; a guy can dream, right?) |

After considering the new offerings from Sony, I bought a used Sony 950. After considering the new offerings from Amazon, I decided to stick with my K3. After considering the iPad2, I kept my original iPad. After reading about the iPhone 4S, I still have my iPhone 4.

I would not buy Sony again as In the past they have been very slow to release firmware updates, if at all. They do not update the firmware with new features, only major bug fixes (except for adding epub support). This does not compare well with Kobo, who are much closer to their community.

As I mention in another thread, I voted by buying two 650s. One for my wife to replace our old PRS-600 and a spare 650, just in case.

I love my new T1.
Just finished my third book last evening, reading the last pages in fading light, something I could not do with my old 300. The print is crisp and clear, a joy to my fading eyesight. I found that a soft downward swipe on the right hand side flips the pages without fail. I've had no problems with the reader other than an occasional improper swipe or tap that sent me elsewhere. Because of this I bookmark more often, no big whoop. I have no complaints with the T1 but then I use it simply as a reader. If I want to do anything more complex I use my wife`s iPad, a nice gadget that comes in a distant second to my T1 for reading. |

Still love my T1 after 3 weeks of heavy use.
However the Sony Reader Library really suxxors. I do not like the synch system. Even after unchecking all the boxes when I plug it in it starts to synch the library. Also if no boxes are checked and you connect to the library and it synchs it removes the books from the reader. Good thing I remembered the page I was on, of the book I am reading. I am going to use Calibre instead at least for a while to see if I prefer it. I've always used Calibre to change formats, change/add meta data and er umm other things preferring the old Sony reader library for my 300, which I really like to use. Seems Sony made the new reader much more complicated and user unfriendly than it needed to... |

I'm loving using Calibre with my T1. It does everything I need a library management program to do. . . and then some!

That is why I said it does everything that I want a management software to do. No others.

Constantly having to deal with updates and fixes to things that shouldn't be 'broken' in the first place is a PITA. No thank you! Sending out fixes to things that should have been done properly in the first place isn't good customer service. It's shoddy workmanship & poor implementation of a product. |

Shopaholic, the T1 is already bit shoddy for me, as reflowed PDFs don't work well (page turns are crazy slow, unusably so). What are the odds Sony will fix this in a firmware update? The x50 series handled reflowed PDFs very well...

I purchased my ereader to read ebooks not PDF. Surely if PDF functionality is so important it is worth buying a bigger screened tablet for that purpose?

PDF functionality for articles and essays (which have no graphics) is very important to me. Since the x50 handled PDFs so well, I think the right question is, why Sony didn't do so good a job with the T1?
