So Canadians should just use the spelling your country uses? Convenient that. I tell you what. I will stop whining about spelling when Canadians start getting thing at the same time as Americans instead of having to wait months or years! For example google voice.
P.S. I am not trying to start an argument about things like google voice just trying to show that Americans only think were the same as them when it is convenient!
Sorry but it is hard for some (me) to take you seriously when your own spelling is so bad.

amarican for American, your for you're, example: 'And your forgetting about words '
Your spelling is bad. Raising your own standards in the area you are criticising, would also raise your credibility.

It does seem that many authors' contracts call for North American rights as one chunk, and then the Commonwealth rights exclude Canada. Then it will be up to the publishers and booksellers to enforce those contract exclusions. Harry Potter books were a fortuitous exception; the British author sold the Canadian rights separate from the US rights.

Compounding this confusion is the decision that physical books sales take place at the bookseller's office while ebook sales take place at the buyer's computer, so we can easily buy British pbooks, but not necessarily the same ebooks.

LOLOL!

I'm sorry to laugh bob123, but it's true! Either your spelling is pretty bad or you have an awful lot of typos. In any case, in the context of this conversation it is funny. =)

These guys beat me to it. I would expect someone who is nit-picking about spelling and language localization to be at least a little bit more careful when posting...

Then again, I empathize. I am much better at catching other people's mistakes than mine as well.

Anyhow... as someone who has learned English late in my life - and 'learned' should not be interpreted too strongly - I have come to the conclusion that there is only one English, and lots of excuses for not knowing how to spell. But I give credit to Americans - pretending you have made up a new language is indeed much easier than learning where those pesky vowels should be placed.

Could I point out that I was criticizing not criticising? And could I also point out that I have not hired any editors, proof reader etc... And I think you will find that I have only used Canadian spelling. And actually I was not criticizing or criticising American spelling. Americans spelling is FINE for AMERICANS! I am not suggesting the Americans should read books in Canadian English( well unless they are by a Canadian author and set in Canada). I am just suggesting that Canadians should (or at least have that option).

Wait a second... I don't see where I said "amarican" in that quote. I have just looked up "your" in the dictionary. It IS a word and it's definition works fine with what I was trying to say. Before you complain about my spelling maybe you should look up the words in the dictionary?

Finally someones talking! Your probably right. It just seems to me that if I can buy a paper book from somewhere I should be able to buy an ebook from there. This shows that I can get a physical thing that has to be shipped around the world but I can't get something that could be shipped to me in less than ten seconds! And really why do they bother restricting the area? Do they really think that if we could buy ebooks from the UK we all would, and that the north American distributors would go out of business?

All this reminds me of my college days. We were required to have a physical dictionary during keyboarding class to edit with (the automatic spellcheckers having been disabled). I used my father's old dictionary, which had been his Canadian mother's before him. Between the Canadian spellings and the out-of-date spellings (it had a lovely picture of Princess Elizabeth, future queen of England) I was able to prove 90% of my typos were correct.

^^Ummm. In the first case, it should have been you are or you're and not your and it didn't work fine with what you were trying to say. I think you are treading on the line at which people are just going to label one as a crackpot and potentially a troll.

I don't really understand the problem bob123. Do you want every book to have Canadian spelling even if the book is not written by a Canadian or set in Canada? That makes no sense to me. It could even be inconsiderate of an author's intentions. Now, if it is just in the case where a book has had its original content changed from Canadian or British to an American-friendly version then I completely agree. It is nice to be able to get the original work as the author intended it.

Sorry, bob123, but "your" is possessive as in "your book", "your cup of tea". The correct word is "you're", which is a contraction for "you are", as in "you're forgetting about words", or "you're wrong about this".

As for "criticising" v. "criticizing" -- both spellings are generally acceptable in Canada, but only the zed version is acceptable in the US.

Okay can we get over my spelling? I NEVER claimed to be a good speller! And I don't see why me having bad spelling (I actually think its better than a lot of peoples) reflects this discussion at all.

I shall now clarify what I want: I want books to just be left in the spelling of the Author. The Author should choose and it should just be done one way for all English speaking places. I would think that the Author would usually choose the spelling of their country. However I am fine if a Canadian Author is writing a book set in the USA and thinks American spelling would make more sense.
What made me make this thread was when I was reading a book by a UK Author set in England and it used American spelling!
What annoys me even more is I have found several UK sites that sell it with the UK spelling (I think even kobo does) but I am not allowed to by it!

Fine! I admit I am wrong about the "your". I am not quite so sure about the "criticising" as my Canadian dictionary is underlining it with red and sites I have found on the internet that compare Canadian and American spelling show it as "Criticizing" in Canada.
