Hi,

Would be better if you open a new thread for your question, won't be mixed with other posts and probably will get answer faster.

Now, B&N books have DRM protection, same for Kindle. Putting the format types aside, the meaning of that is that you won't be able to read B&N books on Kindle or Kindle books on B&N (without any hacking, of course)

On my Android Phone and iPad, I do have B&N app. So that's an alternative. But on new Kindle Fire, I don't know if Amazon will allow B&N to deploy or distribute Nook reader app. I am assuming they will not! Because they want people to buy books from Amazon, not B&N.

Regarding your headset jack question, Yes, I believe it comes with one: Kindle Fire specs

Hi Lisa, I think this is better posted in the Kindle Fire forum as this thread is for one of the Kindle E Ink models.

1) The Kindle Fire might be able to run 3rd party Android apps that allow you to read ePubs. i doubt the Nook app will be available though. So though it might be possible to read Nook ePubs it probably won't be easy as it will most likely require stripping the DRM and converting.

2) The Kindle Fire does support MP3 and audio books and it does have a headset jack.

First, welcome to the board

Another option to consider is rooting. Both the Nook Color and the Kindle Fire are Android tablets, but locked into the ecosystems of B&N and Amazon respectively. Rooting either device will give you access to a broader range of apps through the Android Market. Those apps would include the major book apps - Kindle, Kobo, Nook, and Sony. With these apps on your tablet, you could download books from any of those sources without having to convert the files. I do it all the time on my rooted Nook Color.

Besides an audio jack, the Fire also has speakers. It'll support the following audio formats: MP3, AAC (iTunes), AA (Audible audiobooks), OGG, and WAV. Amazon owns Audible, so they usually provide audio players on their devices to support audiobooks. Amazon also has its own MP3 and video stores, so the Fire is capable of playing music and videos.

I have to say after two days of heavy use...I now love my K4!
The font plugin and the modified amasis font I am now using has me on cloud 9! The K4 is so light and small and I can read for hours without my arms cramping. I love the navigation on the K4, always one thing I have liked about it. It's faster and getting to the dictionary is quicker now.

I do have an issue with the right page button being stiff but the left side I can turn with my thumb with no problems. I am hoping the right one will loosen after more use. I've already nearly dropped it twice tonight out of my hand trying turn the page on the right with my thumb.

I just had to get over my first impressions and disappointment with the screen contrast. It's just I've come to depend on Amazon to roll out top notch stuff but the K4 is a budget reader but a good one. It doesn't feel flimsy and seems solid. It meets my reading needs just fine with a few modifications and for $79 I don't mind doing that to make myself happy with my purchase.

I love that I can leave WiFi on at all times and the battery doesn't budge much at all. I love I no longer have to deal with the personal documents waiting messages that 3G gives.

My only complaints on the K4 is the contrast which is now fixed for me. In fact I'm now going to have to put the same font on the K3 because Caecilia looks so scrawny to me now. The page turn buttons could of been made easier to push by reversing them but other then that the K4 is a great little basic reader.

I think you wont hear me moaning anymore. I still don't know on the Kindle Touch but for now I am happy with my K4 now I've changed the font.

Can you explain how you achieved that? This is my first Kindle and I feel the contrast isn't great, something to remedy that would be fantastic. Thanks.

There a plugin called Kindle Collections for Calibre. Look for the Bold heading on that page that says"Modify Kindle Settings such as Margins and Fonts" and click the spoiler button for instructions. Note: Some fonts look better then others. Georgia looks awful!

The plugin itself can be found in Calibre's "Get New Plugins" buttons in the plugin settings window.

I have mine set to margins: 30 (default: 40) and I settled on a modified version of the Amasis font.

Hi Blossom, I'm glad it is working out for you! I'm always looking for better fonts too. Will you please make a screen capture from your K4 with the Amasis font set on size 3 or 4 and attached it to a post. I would like to see it. Like you, I would very much like to get my hands on the Kindle Condensed font and use only the Bold and BoldItalic, but I've never been able to find it. I think it was specifically done by Amazon for the Kindles and they don't want to publish it for other manufacturers to use. Currently I'm using the following combination to get as close as I can to:

Code:
STYLE FONT NAME CUSTOM NAME FOR K4
Regular: Lexia DaMa Bold: CSLexiaDaMa-Regular.ttf
Italic: Lexia DaMa BoldItalic: CSLexiaDaMa-Italic.ttf
Bold: Caecilia Heavy Bold: CSLexiaDaMa-Bold.ttf
BoldItalic: Caecilia Heavy BoldItalic: CSLexiaDaMa-BoldItalic.ttf
All the styles are bold but the Caecila Heavy is bolder and thus stands out a bit more, but not as well as I would like. I'm still experimenting.

Waiting for the new Kindles to arrive at BB or Target. I may be tempted to upgrade or replace my Kindle 3G depending of how it feels on my hands.

Still the lack of physical buttons on the 3G version is a huge "miss" in my opinion ...

Jack, here are two screen shots on 4 & 5. I read on 5 which makes the text really nice and dark. I think the only way to get the Condense font is to jailbreak your K3. I like what I am using better so I don't think I would change back. I don't think the screenshots truly show the beauty of this font. I've added a camera shot which shows it better.

That does look good. What is the font? Amasi? Where did you get it? And do you use bold for all text. It looks like you don't, so perhaps the regular is bold enough.
