Additionally I use the metadata plugboard to add the Series info to the author line as shown in the attached image.

So I can't compare the two, I am sure you can also manually create collections via calibre too but prefer them to be handled on the fly.

1) Frequent freezes. There does not seem to be a trigger. It freezes when adding books, when loading, when closing, when plugging in a device or when removing it. It froze when I was renaming books. It froze when adding books to collections. It just freezes. I tried it on two different PCs, both running Windows 7, both with the same, frequent, problems.

2) I can't get it to see external memory in my PRS900 or PRS950. If I plug in anything with an SD card or a memory stick, it freezes.

3) It seems to have tons of bugs related to periodical classification. I have imported the same files (old Wall Street Journal issues) multiple times - sometimes they all go under 'books', sometimes they all go under 'periodicals', sometimes they get split. I can't figure it out. By adding/removing/adding again I was able to eventually have most of the stuff show up under 'periodicals'. But some of the magazines I purchased are still under the wrong tab - and I have not been able to fix this. Note that the same files are correctly classified as 'periodicals' under the old software.

4) Some files just won't import. Again, stuff purchased through SONY's own store and that works perfectly with the old software. No error message, no feedback. The file simply does not appear in the library.

5) You can't display handwritten notes on screen like with the old software. Tools to export the same are broken. Old highlights/bookmarks are often missing as well.

6) Page sync works, but it's clumsy (it will sync progress only once you open the file on your pc and accept the sync option in a dialogue box). But I was not able to sync pages/highlights/annotations between my PRS950 and PRS350 by using the PC as a bridge.

7) Some of the purchased content, you just can't delete.

7) A frozen SYNC has forced already 4 factory resets by temporarily bricking my device.

The good? A slightly smarter file management system (the database is one single file now). The sync of page/notes/annotations works only partially (not across multiple devices), but it would be a nice feature - if it worked. The reading pane is much nicer, if you read on screen. You can import files by just dragging them from your desktop into SONY's software.

Overall, SONY has truly outdone itself and surprised me by managing the impossible - a piece of software that sucks even worse than the previous 'Reader Library'. This has the same problems, plus many new bugs.

I have stuck with SONY's software (instead of Calibre) because of its ability to handle annotations. But that is utterly broken, now, so I think I will just give up, uninstall this garbage and either revert to the old Reader Library (which I have still installed - no need to uninstall and no overwriting with the new software) or switch over to Calibre and give up on annotations...
+1, plus at least in the old software you had the ability to delete a book and then re-add later to your library, now every book you have purchased is automatically placed in your library.

The new software also has an issue with display of notes. The old software opened up a split window and then you could click through your list of notes. The new software has a pop-up menu. You select a note and it disappears. Then you have to reopen the list and scroll through it to view the next note. Not very efficient.

Being a previous critic of their Mac software, this seems to be a significant improvement. A few points:
  • I am afraid to use the sync functionality. There is content on my laptop and on my PRS-600; will pressing sync lose content on either laptop or PRS-600? (Maybe this is just me. It's just that I never trusted sync functionality anywhere.)
  • The software works with 64 bit Macs. Yay! Now, why doesn't it seem to cope with the university proxy I am often behind?..
  • It's all very graphiccy isn't it?

Well, I wish I read this thread before going through all the headaches I did with the new software!! LOL Oh well!

I do have a question though. I had some filenames all in caps and I changed it to Upper & Lower case. I removed the all caps version from the software and tried to import the file by Import File and Drag and Drop. Where did they go? I don't see them in the Reader for PC list of books.

To be clear, I cannot purchase or borrow ebooks at university. We have a proxy at uni and when I attempt to borrow ebooks (through a Overdrive library) the Sony Reader software doesn't download the ebooks - and the shop tab doesn't work either. - Since in Australia that tab is just a sticky page to other ebook purchasing websites, that's okay - but it doesn't bode well for purchasing.

Regarding sync. I tried it on my 350. It added all the stuff from the PC library, but left the stuff already on the device unaffected. Some stuff I had both on my PC and the reader - those items were duplicated.

Truly, you can't sync the stuff on the device. You can, however, download it to the PC (by using the 'copy to library' option on the 'books' tab, not from the sync tab) and then sync it.

But all the material to be sync'd has to be on the PC first, from what I can tell.

Sync, by the way, keeps freezing on me if I try to add more than 20 books at once. Which has already led to two hard resets of my device. It's buggy as hell.

Here are a few more things that I've discovered. New purchases (even if made in the old Reader software or on your 950 / T1) are automatically downloaded into the new software and your hard-drive. Not just a cover icon with a download arrow.

The search function also opens up with a pop-up menu like notes and is no longer easy or quick to move backwards and forwards through the found items.

Can you tell me where is this Search function on the software?

Thanks!

When you have a book open, there are buttons in the lower right corner of the window for notes and search.

Hey Bookwork_Girl,

Look at the very bottom of the page on the Reader PC Library and it will tell you how many books are there. On mine, it is kinda faded, in other words not in black ink.

Personally, I do not like the software, and particularly, I do not like the fact it does not post the title and arthur name at the bottom of each book like the old software.
