It's cheaper than two-day shipping on the book normally would be (two-day shipping being what Prime members receive), and only a buck more than standard shipping. It seems to me like non-members are still getting a pretty good deal.

Interesting. I wonder how old that post was? I should probably look. I recently took DRM off a book I got from Amazon for free with no problems.

Just checked, I see it was posted back in July. I guess the hackers already overcame the issue from then.

mldavis2, that is one way of looking at it, saying that the Prime Members paid a fee that absorbed the delivery fee in advance.

I will guarantee you that if you subtracted the costs of free shipping and of two day delivery alone from that fee the cost of my member ship was defrayed within a month of the payment and then you must add to the 11 or more months of no costs the benefit of getting free stuff like video streaming, etc.

Amazon will take care of you. It will be your friend, indeed.

No question that it's a good deal if you have the purchase volume. As for video streaming, I am out in the boonies far enough that my DSL speed is not adequate for video streaming, so that's a non-issue for many of us.

I, personally, have no complaints with Amazon. I like competition; I don't like monopolies which are the inevitable end-result of continued success.

I like to send those little box calendars to relatives and friends at Christmas for one. With Prime it is very economical. That is just one item.

On the Monopoly business, I haven't been involved in that discussion much, but most the people have made good arguments that Amazon isn't a Monopoly.

On DSL, I was running 3/4 Mbps, but with an introductory U-Verse plan for Voice and Internet, man I am zooming at 12Mbps. I am like that guy in front of the speakers with the wind whipping back his hair and his ears.

The TV deal with U-Verse was good too but I am not at home enough to benefit from it, and really mostly download what I want so I let that go.

Check on the U-Verse in your area.

Well, another great experience with my friend Amazon. I ordered several small items including a small brass compass that I was curious about, that glows for less than 4USD. Of course it came with free delivery, and 2 day shipping.

I noticed before I took it out of the blister pack that there were air bubbles inside the compass that obstructed the needle.

I just logged into my account, went to "return items" where it had a list of what I had received. Clicked on the compass. Clicked on defective, and Amazon printed a shipping label that I will put on a box, probably same box, and drop off at "The UPS Store."

Such ease. Such satisfaction. Even though the compass was defective, Amazon did its part.

I don't know if I will order the same compass or not again when I am in the buying mood. Probably. It would have just been a spare, or an extra to add to the assortment or direction devices I carry when I am trekking somewhere. I learned a hard lesson a long time ago in dense mountain terrain that a compass was a good thing to have. (I didn't have one at that time or much else (like water,) and it took me a long while to find a camp in the rain and the dark.)

That $4 compass in another time would have been considered quite valuable. It would have been considered remarkable with a liquid sealed needle, and glowing in the dark. The craftsmanship would have been very respectable in an earlier time.

In fact that is why I wanted to see it. To check the craftsmanship, accuracy, and then probably throw in in a box, pack, or pouch or a compartment somewhere as a spare if it met muster.

Hang on ! You have to pay for release date delivery ? When I ordered the Harry potter books i had them on release day, free shipping !

I'm seriously disappointed with amazon lowering the quality of standard delivery to push people into going premium.
