Plus, Amazon is making their DRM increasingly difficult to crack. Check out Apprentice Alf’s blog for more information. Most other ebook DRM is easier to crack (not including Apple but I don’t buy ebooks from them, either).

Golden Handcuffs are nothing new to any consumer focused industry. I’m not quite sure why people always act surprised when speaking of golden handcuffs in relation to Amazon.

Well, I made another order from Amazon, my friend.

Let me see. This is Oct 2, 2011, about 5AM EST., and they say delivery will be by Oct 5. Or course today is Sunday, but I still will look for delivery on Oct 4. You can expect friends to go the extra mile.
The total is about $15.
Of course the two day delivery is free
and the shipping is free.

Amazon!!!!!!!!!!

\\

Also Amazon has for pre-order the new Galaxy S wifi 5" Android player for 269USD. I have one in my CART, but delayed as I think a few days on it.

5" display
3.07" width
5.56" long [dimensions corrected]

Neat for a pocket reader, etc. No difficulties with file systems.

Of course it is color and back lit since it is LCD but hey the Fire is LCD. The Nook Color is LCD.

And yet again, at all times day or night, 365 1/4 days a year, a friend like Amazon is ready.

Two items less than $9 total, ordered at about 1 AM EST.
Free delivery.
Two day delivery.
Both due to arrive by Oct 5, 2011.

Some people say well Amazon can't be a friend. It is a business trying to do good business things so that I am happy and satisfied and so they can keep my business.

Well that may be so, but I have had human friends that weren't so interested in keeping me happy and satisfied. I have had family and neighbors. I have had wives. I have had business associates, bosses and customers. None of these worked as hard to keep me happy and satisfied.

I suppose it is clear now. AMAZON IS MY BEST FRIEND!

Indeed.

If I would marry amazon I would. My wife would even let me. They deliver stuff automagically. I can press a button once to order stuff. They have pretty much everything you can imagine. I'm "window" shopping on amazon several times a day. I get all of my toiletry type items as subscribe & save. I use amazon prime. I could go on forever.

I followed Alf's instructions to installing the DRM stripping on Calibre... easy. Though I'm guessing you mean it's harder for people to figure out how to break Amazon's DRM. As long as they can do it though I'm happy. And let's face it, most things that are made to enforce copyright end up being cracked or hacked by someone.

Just looking at Margaret Atwood's new book In Other Worlds
It will be released in a couple of weeks. I added it to my wish list, but noticed this on the page:

So is this an extra "Same Day" delivery fee, or a new higher "same day" delivery fee? Also is this for an e-book or a physical book?

It appears to be new. At least I've never seen it before and I too am wondering about the ebook vs. pbook...

The notice is NOT on the Kindle Page. Here's the main page link: http://www.amazon.com/Other-Worlds-S.../dp/0385533969

The Prime customers have already paid the delivery fee, of course, in advance. Me? I'll wait a while until the 'new' wears off and get it on free delivery sometime later. That will also give readers a chance to review and rate it. Not everything written by good authors is going to be good, and few books are worth paying new-release prices so I can say I've read it first. You guys with full time jobs can do my beta-testing for me, OK?

OTOH, all the retailers are required to implement geographic checking too, and Amazon makes by far the weakest effort to enforce this, so personally they are much more my friend than B&N is

well, me too, but my point is more that this is appears to be a new fee they've tacked on.

(probably to make up for that buck-2-ninety-five they are losing on every Kindle Fire Sale. )

Could not find the post I was referring to. Here is a thread discussing: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...light=fair+end

Quote:
"As we have said many times, we are strongly against piracy. But we are for “fair-use” rights.

Pirates can and do create ebooks even if no digital copy of the book exists (Harry Potter anyone?). They have been doing that for a long time. Pirates can always fall back on scanning a hard copy and creating a pdf.

Therefore, DRM can not really do anything to prevent actual ebook piracy.

The truth is that DRM is actually about enabling vendor lock-in. Forcing you to stay with the vendor given your large investment in ebooks so that they can enforce a license agreement to “rent” you the book at prices far above “rental” prices and approaching or surpassing full paper book prices. Vendors like Amazon want to take away your “fair use” rights. They do not want you to be able to archive the book as html (so it never gets lost) and they do not want you to convert it to your favourite reader format.

The problem is Amazon is now getting nasty about it.

In the space of a few short months, their developers have completely revamped their “secure storage” of the information needed to remove the DRM on both of their Kindle for PC and Kindle for Mac applications.

They have now added code to their Kindle application that tries to prevent a debugger from attaching, detects when a debugger is being used, and literally changes the path the code takes on the fly depending on whether the process with that pid is being debugged or not. So any use of a debugger will result in deliberately incorrect information/code paths being selected with incorrect data DRM data being used which will result in ebooks that won’t open triggering the need to “re-register” with Amazon.

It has been a good fight to protect our fair use rights, but given the fast approach of encrypted binaries and sandboxing, coupled with now active detection/counter-measures for using a debugger, it is a fight we are very soon going to lose. I hope Amazon and others like them are proud of themselves."

So, this goes back to Amazon being a corporation like all others. It is not human. It does not have feelings. It is not my friend. It only has interest in me as long as I have money to feed it.
