Isn't there some kind of VAT in USA too ?

There's sales tax, but advertised prices never include it, and not everybody pays it.

I don't seem to pay it when buying from Australia which is nice for me. No mark up at all. No VAT, no import tax, etc. I figured out if I bought a Kindle 4 with no keyboard it will cost me about $144AU. That includes shipping. The Kindle 3 keyboard and any other device I've looked at except for the Kobo will all cost me more than that. So I think it's a pretty good deal for Australians. Would love it more if I could buy the Kindle 4 here directly like I can the Kindle 3.

No need to hope for competition, we've already got it.

I think speedlever's point is that Amazon may have even surpassed B&N and now B&N needs to make sure it can keep up.

If the rumors are right, BN could be a step ahead of Amazon with their 10" tablet.

As a non-tablet user, that does not excite me, but hopefully its enough to keep Amazon honest. I really like Amazon & The Kindle, but I don't want to end up paying ridiculous prices becuase they've suddenly taken over the world. They are not a monopoly and I'd like to keep them that way.

Amazon has pretty much revealed their 7 inch cards early, over a month away from release. That is going to give B&N an advantage in knowing what to price their NC2 at. We'll see what they will do with it.

Well the two new touchscreen models from Kobo and Sony available (or soon to be) in Australia are yet to be threatened by Amazon's new Kindle touch.

http://www.teleread.com/paul-biba/in...otr-kowalczyk/

Bit of a shame as it would have been great to have a choice of three touch ereaders (Sony, Kobo and Kindle) to provide good competition four our coin. Having just purchased a K3 for my wife and now seriously looking at a PRS-T1 to replace my PRS-300 I wonder if the easy availability of the Kindle Touch might have given me more food for thought.

Probably not.

Regardless, I believe that Amazon have missed an opportunity here.

Amazon probably acted to take away any advantage B&N might get. B&N was supposed to have acted by the end of September and right now nothing.

I think Amazon's offerings which seemed to surprise everyone in the number of tablets, etc. might have really shook up B&N's plans. They might even be back at the old "emergency drawing board."

On the other hand, just like Steve Jobs with his "only one size 9.7" gives that experience Jeff Bezos's "cloud in the sky" so no on board storage idea gives rise to opportunities for more practical approaches for other vendors.

B&N's color Nook took advantage of the other vendors lack of color. Heck some people like color and want it, and like the natural back lit screen. The Nook Color took advantage of that niche against the Kindle.

It is like fighters bobbing and weaving about, with different tactics, knock out punches. Undercut, right cross, windmills, body blows, jabs, etc.

Or better yet (but not boxing) hit them where they aren't looking, the old "sneak punch."

The Nook developers are working around the clock. The cots are brought in. The food is brought in. No one goes home. These are desperate times!
I am sure that some places and groups at Barnes and Noble have heard the scary words, "The Life of the Company is at Stake!"

But they could be threatened by Kindle's new non touch model. As someone who doesn't want touch screen I'd rather buy Kindle 4 non-touch over the Kobo or Sony.

I don't think BN can afford to sell their product at whisper-thin margins or at a loss like Amazon can.

I posted an article earlier:

Bezos won’t say whether he thinks he’ll lose money on the device itself, only that he’s at ease flirting with red ink. “Certainly this is a for-profit business,” he says. “Let’s put it this way. We are and always have been very comfortable at operating at extremely low margins.”

I'll echo that for AU. Kobo's were/are reasonably well known here being sold through Borders the largest book chain till it's recent closure (they also sold SONY's but they were less prominent)... that said I'd guess that Kindle has the mindshare if not market share with all the US TV and associated endorsements (Opera and her ilk).

Isn't that a little misleading. As I see it, it has a smaller battery, no audio componentary, less memory (half), no hardware/physical keyboard, same screen. It is only the processor that is upgraded (which do we know exactly what silicon it is now?).

Can't say I'd upgrade from a Kindle (3) Keyboard unless you love the new form factor or really can't stand the page refresh on every turn (taking into acount no 3G unless you wait for the Touch which is more of a change in interface/input).

That may well be true and I certainly agree with you. However the purchasers of "nu" tech want touchscreens. I guess we can blame Apple for that
