Purchasing a Sony Reader now would be a matter of financial decision though. The old one is perfectly fine for what I need right now though. Quote:

As there is some discussion in this thread on page turning by tapping, I would like to point out that the next version of PRS+ will support this feature for all Sony touchscreen models. It will offer a choice of areas for next/previous (such as left/right, top/bottom). All other tap- and gesture-related functionality remains unchanged (i.e. everything still works

This sounds good... when do you think it might be available? The official version, that is, I'm not up to compiling my own.

According me, the new Kindle Touch is a much better device, because:
1) it costs less; 2) his body is better (the back is metallic), while the back of the T1 is shining plastic; 3) the internal memory is double (4 Giga instead of 2 Giga); 4) has a better bactery (2 months instead of the 1 of the T1); 5) has a better screen (according to the impressions of those that have alredy received it); 6) has a better way to turn pages. |

prsita: The Kindles (new ones included) use exactly the same type of screen as the Sony's (EInk Pearl), so the difference is 0, no matter what uninformed sources might claim. And if you don't mind installing PRS+, it's a pretty safe bet that you can get the T-1 to do page turning by taps as well, and with more options (once the device is supported). On points 1-4 however, you're right ![]() |

For the screen of the new Kindle, j have read the reports of the first users and the site of the Amazon, where they talk about an improved screen. The ony way to judge is by person, putting side by side the new two models. Last edited by prsita; 09-30-2011 at 12:52 PM. |

Were they specifically comparing it to the Sony readers? Most of my family joined the Kindle mafia in the past year, and my 950 screen seems better than the one on their readers.

Amazon's own page with the screen info (here) clearly states EInk Pearl, and I have not seen them claim 'improved screens'. In fact, EInk has clearly stated that it will not come out with new screens this year. So yes, the screens are 100% the same. Screens from different batches will always differ in quality, as will newly made ones vs old ones.
And if Amazon really did somehow have 'improved' screens, wouldn't they be shouting it from the rooftops? |

I believe the were comparing screens between the K4 non touch to the K3.
I'm still on the fence between the Sony T1 & the new Kindle Touch. I probably won't be buying one this year though. I really like my Sony 350 & it is serving me quite well & after all I just bought it in January.....Now if someone gave it to me for my birthday in December.... ![]() |

I agree with you there. And I like the $.99 bargains. By getting these books I have found a lot of new authors. I prefer mysteries & sci-fi/fantasy & they have a lot of specials on these...More of the mystery though.

Only gonna quote/rebuke the points I disagree with. If I didn't list one of your points, it's because I'm not really gonna argue, or someone has already done it for me.

With all the silly measurements being made, and that the previous Kindles magically went from 2 weeks to 2 months based on how they measure, when the Nook Touch came out... can we really be sure that this is really an accurate comparison? I do amateur astronomy, and one of the biggest problems when buying gear there is that mounts for telescopes have weight capacities listed in the specs. But every brand measures their capacity differently. So you can't compare the capacity of any two mounts directly, sometimes even with the same brand you can't do it. I see the same problem here when they keep changing how they measure battery life. As I've said in other threads though, the raw specs themselves only tell part of the tale. Ignoring the software feature set and stability may come back to bite some folks. Amazon has a great integrated purchasing story, although I've always enjoyed Sony's feature set more (since I tend to shop around for books, and like having my library with me, auto-organized by Calibre). You can't really quantify that in specs, nor can you ignore it, although it can be much more subjective than other measures. |

I was hoping Amazon would fix that with the new models, but if they have, no one has said. I admit the new Kindles made me blink for a moment ($79! Are you kidding?) - but comparing features that I would actually *use*, I'm not cancelling my T1 pre-order. |
