Looking a the new Kindle Touch & The New Sony...hmmmm. I like the Sony better because it does have buttons in case you want to use them. Not that I do often except for the options & font & page editing. BUT I prefer the Kindle muted bezel. But I like the Sony color choices....I like the Kindle store for the cheaper books I can find there & I'm not crazy about the Sony book store so far. I wonder if Sony will be improving it? At any rate it was interesting reading bout the new Kindle. Some people are happy that they still offer 3G. I think some are disappointed they no longer have the external keyboard. So what do you think? Still prefer Sony. I'm pretty sure I do. I am so happy I have my 350. |

The new Kindles look a much better deal than the SHINY new Sony. The matte finish, along with the improved way of turning pages (tapping, rather than finger-swiping), sold me. I also like the non-touch Kindle, as it's weight is comparable to the PRS-350 (and I'd assume its size isn't too far off, but I haven't compared real specs), and it has side buttons. And it's damn cheap. £89 for the ad-free version on the UK Amazon site. Compare that to the £129-£139 that Sony is charging for its latest. If Sony hadn't took the decision to release a product that appears to double as a vanity mirror, I'd be more torn, as I'm quite partial to the PRS-350 which I own. But they did, and more fool them. They (the new Sony devices) are going to look horrible in stores with spot lighting. I buy all my books from Amazon as it is, and strip and convert them. I'd still do that if I owned an actual Kindle device, for archive purposes (and future proofing), but I'd keep the original DRM-riddled files on the Kindle and take advantage of Amazon's impressive cloud-based ecosystem. |

I am in the market for a new e-ink reader, so I was very interested in the announcements today. I liked the price of $99 for a reader, but I do have some reservations. 1. I don't like advertisements anywhere on my reader. So if I went with no SO on the kindle the price is $139. 2. I wanted a memory card slot on the reader. The T1 has a slot, the Kindle doesn't. 3. The Amazon store is indeed a better option right now than the Sony store, but there are other places to buy books online. So, after all of that, it comes down to whether or not I mind paying $10 more for the Sony T1. The answer for me is yes. I am going to wait though until I can hear some hands-on reviews before I complete the sale. Last edited by jersysman; 09-28-2011 at 06:52 PM. Reason: Incorrectly used Sony instead of Kindle when saying which didn't have a SD slot |

If anyone's primary object to buying a T1 is the color, just skin the thing. Skins are so easy to come by these days, that color or shiny vs. matte finish can be considered almost a non-factor when deciding what to buy.

Not to mention the ability to shop around between other ePub-based stores*, download from Feedbooks, Baen and other places directly from the device. Not sure if you can say, buy/download from Kobo directly though. Certainly something I'm planning on testing when I get mine. *Not including Apple's which uses Fairplay DRM. Only kinda includes B&N's store because the DRM is likely incompatible, but the book is only locked with your personal information . |

FYI: You can download from Feedbooks wirelessly to the Kindle, and you can also now get library books on the Kindle. |

I knew about the library half of it (kinda hard not to know with the publicity), which is why I didn't give the Sony a plus mark for it.

Unless I misunderstand you can download directly from the library to the Sony T1 right? I'm not sure that is possible with the Kindle. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm probably going to buy the T1 when it becomes a bit more available and I can handle it first. The new Kindle's look very nice but, as has been stated, I like the epub format and don't want to have to convert all my books. My PRS-300 will go to my son, who has my old prs? with the broken power switch...he uses a paper clip to turn it on so he will be happy to get my 300. |

Swiping is seamless and really no different than tapping, except that it doesn't share a function with word selection. fixed Last edited by fafaforza; 09-28-2011 at 11:24 PM.

I will still be getting two new Sonys, one for my wife and one for my parents. I will probably also get a kindle button since they are so cheap. |
