In my case, Sony placed a 'pending' charge of the full amount on my card. But to place a charge it's two steps. There's the authorization (which puts the funds on hold on the card), and then the charge itself. In my case, companies will run the authorization, and then never place the charge. The hold on the funds will drop off after 3 days or so on its own.

Oh, and as an FYI, I got my shipment notice for it to arrive on Monday. Will have some impressions soon.

prett sure it is against visa / mastercard rules to take money before shipping goods. reputable retailers e.g. Amazon, never do it. some smaller ones may do so out of ignorance but Sony cannt claim that, surely.
why not call sony again & tell them to put the money back until reader is ready to ship. mention distance selling regulations.
PS there is no delivery date info on site and there is no warning that they'll take money immediately. I'm sure that combination makes taking your payment illegal & could be referred to consumer watchdogs.

I checked for other UK retailers comparison pre-order prices but none of the usual culprits have the T1, & google shopping found none.

Thanks for the advice cybmole, I cancelled the order straight away and actually bought a PRS 650 instead at the weekend as after looking at it again i decided I wanted the metal case of the 650 rather than the platic case of the T1.

Looks like Best Buy Canada has this for pre-order, but can't find it anywhere on the Best Buy USA site.

BB USA carries about every ereader/tablet known to man except Sony....they used to carry them, not sure why they stopped.

Can't sell it if you don't have any to sell. They stopped get stock months ago.

And another update. I was supposed to receive my T1 today, but it looks like it fell off the truck. Last update was that it left the origin sorting facility, and then nothing. No delivery attempt today, and now no estimated delivery date either.

The worst part is that this is just the minor problem in a string of problems going on today. I was kinda hoping I'd have something to distract me a bit from all the other stuff I had to deal with.

So looks like the other guy will beat me to it with first impressions. Oh well.

My T1 was showing on the FedEx site as due for delivery today, but the tracking info stopped getting updated after the sorting facility received the package.

Just received the following email from Sony:

Thank you for your recent Sony purchase.

We would like to inform you we are experiencing a delay with part of your Sony Store order. Your order has been rescheduled to ship on 09/30/2011.

You will be recieving a $25 discount on your order for this delay. We will send you an email confirmation for your credit as soon as it has been processed.

The tracking number you originally received will remain the same. This information will also be available with the order history in your Sony Store Account.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

Looks like I just got my T1 for $124.00

Yup. I got the same e-mail.

Looks like they guy who commented about Sony recalling them for some last-minute problem was probably right.

I agree. Not too happy with the lag in time it took to tell me (3 days after the delivery date quoted, 6 after shipping)... but telling me that there was a delay, when it will re-ship, and offering compensation works out in the end. I'm not in so much of a rush that I'll complain about a cheaper T1 that will still arrive by the time it would have had the 10/2 estimate been correct.
