No, Splenda is natural sugar, modified chemically to be non-digestible. It's healthier then the white crap that you find in most "sugar" packets, jars, and etc. It is about as sweet and has no calories or carbs. Of course since its chemically altered some ppl fear it, but what i dont get is how they can fear splenda and then poor that highly processed white crap in their food/drinks and call it better?

Something like Stevia is probably better still, and I have some growing out back that I plan to try soon, I think its almost ready for harvesting. Stevia is 0 cal/carb, but 100% natural so I figure its worth checking into.

As a person that has to deal with blood sugar issues, I can not afford to much around even with the agave honey and other natural sweeteners that are somewhat better then that white crap. I have to stick with 0 cal/carb for my sweeteners.

So question for the peanut gallery here... I want to learn a new language, and trying to decide which. This is what i know so far:

* American English - native tongue
* ASL - I am a bit rusty in it, but could pick it back up pretty fast. I plan to keep this up somehow...
* Greek - I can read and write this if I have my books handy, can not speak it at all
* French and German - had a small amount of this in middle school - only vaguely remember.
* Spanish - had three years of schooling in it, but have not used it in over two decades

So, thinking...

Italian - this is where my father's family is from, vast majority of my relatives (of which I do not know at all) still lives there and speaks it as their native tongue.

Spanish - In America, this is the second most used language, so knowing it may actually be useful. I probably could pick it up somewhat quicker, as at one time I could struggle through a conversation in it.

Mainly thinking about those two, but open for options. Dunno. Any suggestions?

Oh, umm to stay on topic.. more Black Silk!

Between the two... I'd give it a coin-toss. I spoke decent Spanish and my dad spoke Italian. We could carry on a conversation in each language and mostly get what the other person was saying.

It wound up causing the back of my head some grief because I'd give him hell saying, "What the hell, your Spanish sucks!"

On-topic - Some Gevalia coffee roast that a co-worker gave me prior to taking a couple weeks off for "paternity" leave.

Go for Italian if you study it for fun. Otherwise, Spanish, because it's widely used.

But don't trust me. I'm inexperienced

From the linguistic point of view, I have no doubts in pushing German in first place. For the literature, poetry and philosophical opera. For the richness of vocabulary. Which is a fact: 4 times larger than English.

Then, there is the most important reason. There are German words with a depth of meaning or with shades of meaning that are not found in other languages. Look up heimat for instance. Only reading in original will make you meet these enriching words.

French peanut here, who speaks french (duh), english, spanish and german:
English obviously is straight, practical and useful.
French is super difficult, so unless you are crazy, don't go there. But it is a fascinating idiom in its subtleties. Not very logical though, and packed with irregularities that you have to learn, no explanations for those.
Spanish is very sexy imo, not difficult if you want to understand what you read, and useful. Good authors too, so it is definitely worse the hassle.
German is a not that difficult to learn language, very logical so if you are into maths, go for it, and has a very impressive amount of words as beppe already stressed out. I speak it better than English, but only because I had to write a lot of reports in German, writing in German is imo is the best way to learn it. I am not at all in the romantic/tortured spirit of it, so I never read much in German.

Between Italian and Spanish, I guess I would put Spanish first because of its usefulness, but it is a hard choice to make. Italian sounds lovely to my ears too.

Don't want to be a pain in the neck, but where is Stitch ?

Coke Zero 1 in my cup.

And I'll query that vocabulary figure. This discussion has recently happened in another thread. It's very hard to make comparisons, because of the different ways of counting words.

The OED, the closest thing to an authority in English, reckons there are about 175,000 words in current use.

I beleive that in German Duden is the rough equivalent of the OED, and contains around 135,000 words.

THe next tough question of course is how to learn it. Thinking of trying a software package like Rossetta Stone to get started. My son has "hook on Spanish" that someone gave him... the bast way of course would be to travel some place where its spoken and live there, but thats not an option.

Those of you that have learned as ADULTS a 2nd, 3rd, or nth language, what worked for you?

Some more Black Silk in me cup... but running out.

THus we see the sucky part of internet relationships.. something could be way wrong, he could need major help... OR he could just be extra busy and be back in a few. No way to ever know. Unless you have a relationship with him IRL in addition to the forums.

I always said the same about Hebrew.

I think it could be said about any language but I guess in German it is more noticeable because you say it the same way you write it vs. English.

I think German language would be the only language I would be able to succeed.

Oh definitely considering Chinese as a later addition, just cause it seems fun, but I have no connection to it where spanish and Italian I have connection and opportunity to use.
