But he's just phoned Amazon, and a free replacement will be here on Wednesday.

I can't quite decide whether to be cross because of the broken Kindle (which seems to me to quite possibly be part of a bad batch) or pleased because of the swift and easy replacement.

I suspect I tend towards the latter, as I've certainly not been put off getting other Kindles in the future.
Their customer service is one of the things I love about Amazon. I've had the same experience, except mine broke after falling off a desk onto a linoleum-covered concrete floor. I was told that was considered "normal use" and a free replacement arrived the next day.

You're not alone. More than once I've made it all the way through Superbowl Sunday without discovering who was playing.

Still, I try to nod and look interested when others are talking, and if asked my opinion on why a particular team lost, I say, "Because they didn't come to play ball." It makes no sense, but it seems to satisfy them.

Rant: To the lady whose children screamed in terror at my service dog today you should be ashamed of yourself teaching your kids to be afraid of dogs.

Rave for Jin who did nothing but look at those kids.

Confession: I did something truly awful today.

I went to a library and borrowed a book. A real one with paper and ink. Just...just to touch the pages and feel the texture; then there's the smell of the binding of rich leather.

A book, a real book. Yes I do remember them and I have one now. Not this stupid kindle thing with it's several hundred volumes in it. Can't wait to read it.

Know something else? Can't get Star Reduction Tables in a Kindle either. Still need to look them up the old fashioned way, in a book. But then I don't think any of you can use a sextant either.

Fear isn't always taught. One of the kids could have had a bad experience. I would say shame on the mother, however, for not showing the children that your dog was not doing anything wrong, and was actually providing a service.

As to your borrowing a real book. ENJOY! Nothing there to confess. We're supposedly a forum full of "book lovers" regardless of the book's form. Paper was here before eink and it would be a shame to "waste" books that have already been printed.

I think that one book that should come with every eBook reader is Fahrenheit 451.

"Good evening, my name is 'Things to Come' and I was written by H. G. Wells."

Dog story.

In March I was escorting a mother and two small children through the staff area (rather than make them go the long way round) to the accommodation area. One of the children (pre-school age) had recently recovered from a dog attack where he was moderately injured.

The guard dogs (5) were waiting to be let out for the night, but were a little late because of these people. As we were walking up to the rooms, the dogs in their excitement had managed to break down the gate and wanted to come walkies with us. They were so exuberant playing around us knocking each other and the children over. The little boy squatted down and covered his head and his mum quickly picked him up.

I was very angry that someone had let the dogs out before we had passed(didn't think that the dogs had done it themselves). The mother was frightened, but handled the situation quite well. I was so glad I was with them so the dogs knew at least one of us on the track.

I am glad that the dogs did not see them as intruders and have a go at them. But at the same time the dogs are kept in that area for a reason.

I hope they don't play with the next lot of robbers that come over the fence.

Jin is a service dog. He and I are never apart. It's amazing the reactions we get from people. Everything from total admiration to being abused by people on the street and in eateries and stores. However he does get to play with kids a lot at the park. Parents are horrified that I tell their 3 year olds you have to take the ball from the doggies mouth and throw it for him. The kids get it. Mom's don't. Seems most larger dogs like Jin have an inbred sense about children that they don't mean it when tails and ears get pulled. Jin will even let a kid hold his tail as we walk down the street. It's called "Peter and the wolf."

Rave about my dog. Blue Djinn. Click for full size.

Service Dog Blue Djinn.....In his service dog vest. .....Reminds us all that.......Every dog needs a resume

you ever have one of those days where everything, i mean EVERYthing, goes wrong? then you think that nothing else can go wrong and something does? yeah take that and multiply it by every day this week.

work has been the worst though. rude phone calls, unappreciative end users, not to mention our entire network crashed today, which mean that all 800 users in the corporate office were without internet access and all systems were down, plus all systems were down for all branch users and all 1500 agents.

i took 50 phone calls today. my normal is 25-30. multiply that time 14 support analysts.....the damn phones never stopped all day. so the network finally comes back up and access is restored......only to crash again 20 min later.

and that's just the work part.....

to make it simple, my social life is a mess. plus the weather turned cold today and i could really use a hug but all of my friends live in different states

Grrrrrrr.... I am getting angry.
I put in a new aquarium and I can't get the water balanced. The fish keep dying and the water goes from clear to cloudy to clear again!
Any of you who keep fish got any ideas?

Here is what I've checked so far;
1. The water is well aged, so no CL
2. The pH is 7 Perfectly neutral
3. The tank is only set up for a couple of days so overfeeding isn't an issue. Besides, I used to breed several different species when I was a kid, so I know how much to feed.
4. I've tested for Nitrates and for Nitrites. All normal
5. The fish come from healthy tanks as do the plants.
6. No plastics inside the tank other than the intake tube for a large filter. I've changed the filter material several times.
7. Fish food is a mix of TetraMin flakes and freeze dried tubifex worms, a combination I've fed for years.

So why are the fish continuing to die?
