In case anyone is curious, I found out the size, seems ~790mb is for B&N data, ~240mb for user data, and rest is used for system/OS related things of the 2gb of internal storage.

Not a big deal as others have said since it seems you can just use up to a 32gb sd card.

The more I look into details, I'm moving Nook STR to top of my list for the first e-Ink device I plan o buying. It is running a full fledged version of Android 2.1 and it seems fairly easy to get root access to allow you to install other applications from the Android Market.

Agreed and yet it is still a dumb way for BN to partition the device. There is no real reason to force people to make that decision.

Also there is alot of memory for sideloaded, ebooks are small files and also archiving is a great management tool as well.

So yes it is people complaining for the sake of complaining.
So you did decide to be one of 'those people'.

And by 'those people', I mean someone who argues that because something isn't important to them, anyone who says it's important to them is just whining.

It's not important to you, we get it.

But if it's not important, why are you spending so much energy defending it?

dumb is a subjective word since not knowing what the reasoning is behind it. It could be that certain nook books require more space, or for major updates or to give a more incentive to buy from BN instead of outside. I mean just like Amazon they are in the business to sell books. I don't know why it is like that.

But also you can counter there is no reason for Amazon to force to buy only their books and only mobi . but they do it because that's the way it is .

I said it's not a big deal in regards to it's usage.

also because it get's tiring to hear people complain and whine over something they don't really understand or take the time to see what can be done to work with it.

for example is buying a $4 2Gig Sd really that big of pain in the you know what? Why not use the archiving feature to manage space.

" I hate my nook, it doesn't start my car in the morning"

It just bugs me when people scream the sky is falling for the sake of yelling to complain and whine.

No one has said that. They've said they don't like it, they've said they think it's stupid and inconvenient.

Anyway, why make workarounds? Why buy a device with a feature that renders the device *as is* harder to use than it needs to be, when there are other devices out there that are similar but without the hassle?

It's not 'whining' to point out features one doesn't like. Some manufacturers actually listen to their customers (or potential customers).

I know, hard to believe, but true.

Calling people 'whiners' because you disagree with them about the usefulness of a feature is downright rude.

For the 1,000,000 time. There are other places you can buy books for the Kindle, even some that don't require stripping DRM, that are not Amazon. All the places you can download free books for the Nook, you can download free books for the Kindle. And Amazon does not partition the memory so people who don't buy books from Amazon are able to store the same number of books from other dealers as they would with Amazon purchased books.

BN is the only ebook retailer that I have heard of who sets aside for BN books and then other books.

And that is stupid. I can get setting aside memory for updates, I believe Amazon does that but not partitioning the memory so that people are inconvenienced if they chose to shop from a store other then BN.

And while it is a small inconvenience, it is an inconvenience. With the amount of memory available on the Nook there should be no reason for anyone to have to use an SD card due to lack of space.

Amazon does't partiion memory because it OWNS mobi. it's their own format.

And please spare us the " you can buy other books from other places" it's mobi, they are obscure athurs and titles or out of copyrite any can get. You can only buy from the major publishers from the kindle store.

Hmmm and here I thought having expandable memory and Sd Card slot was a feature, Well unless you are a kindle owner then when some other product has it , it becomes a liablity?

I don't believe I said it was a liability. I believe I said that people shouldn't have to use it when their device has memory available.

So Guttenburg, Mobil Reads, and Feedbooks are not good places to get books? Or is it that they don't have thousands of free books that can be downloaded onto a Kindle? Never mind the folks who buy books from Baen and Fictionwise and Waterhouse (the UK gang). Or the folks who buy from where ever they want and remove the DRM. Anyone who falls into any of those catagories, and there are more then a few, can side load their books onto their Kindle and not worry about memory restrictions outside of the 4GB restriction.

Remove the Kindle from the discussion. Does Sony or Kobo have their memory set up so that only a certain percentage can be used for books bought from other stores? I believe the answer is no.

So of the big four e-readers, only BN has a system that sets aside memory for side loaded books sold by someone other then their book store.

Is it that big of a deal? Who knows. If I bought a Nook Color because I wanted a well priced mini tablet that can read books from many different stores and I find that I cannot add all the books that I want because of how the memory is partitioned it probably is. When I buy an e-reader that tells me I can store 3,500 books on it I might want to store 3,500 books on it. I shouldn't have to use a memory card to store books until I have hit that limit.

The Memory card is nice but why should people have to use it when they have space on their device.

It is stupid.

It is stupid.
It's a sneaky way of trying to bind people to BN.com store. So it's not only stupid, it's borderline dishonest.

At least Amazon and Apple are upfront about their walled gardens. BN seems to be trying to wall their garden without anyone noticing.

Sneaky.

According to the manual books on the external SD card only appear in the "My Files" section of the library. They do not appear in the book section.

So out of the bjg four only the kindle doesnt support epub. That is stupid. So let me gets this straight. Telling people to strip drm and use calibre to convert is not stupid or an inconvience. But the whole 3seconds it takes to pop in an sd card is? Wow. Just a wow
