It's interesting that we usually claim that we are not religious but when time is hard/important, e.g., final exams, family in hospital, natural disasters, Lunar New Years... we suddenly all pray and think of "God". Wholeheartedly.

I knew you would notice and comment on that Marxism - Leninism is interesting, and so is the Communist thing, but I never got to know why they are such weird/absurd ideas for Westerners? Not very often but not rarely either, they are even used to insult, to tease those who are from the USSR. People think ill of the communists. Why so? Is that because we are taught different views in schools?
(Uhm... perhaps this is not in the right thread?)

Wow, I don't check this thread for 2 days and all of the sudden you guys are all engaged in a serious conversation about religion.

Euhm ... Yeah ... Not at all actually. I don't ever pray or think of any god. Ever since I was a little girl I found the whole notion of someone 'up there' taking care of us very farfetched. I believe in science. The big bang. But that doesn't mean that I don't have respect for people who do believe. The church on the other hand will never get my sympathy.

I don't think it's all that important to give a name to one's 'higher power,' (if I may borrow a phrase from AA,) to take comfort in knowing it exists. The very first sentence in the 'Tao Te Ching,' the 'bible' (for lack of a better term) of Taoist belief, says; "The Tao that can be named is not eternal Tao." That is, if you can name your higher power, it's not high enough. At least, that's what Taoist believe. Personally, I tend to agree!
But you just named it "higher power."

And this is why I stay out of the Politics and Religion forum, because I don't WANT to know whether I agree or disagree with you guys about politics or religion! Ignorance is bliss. So I'm not discussing this.

Water in my cup, straight from the tap. I am so glad our water main problem was fixed so we don't have to boil anymore!

I believe in Science. I believe in God, the two are not mutually exclusive. I believe that there are things that science will eventually be able to explain that today we call miracles. I believe that God gave us the ability to learn and grow and that we have been able to explore and discover what we have because of how we have applied those blessings.

(shrugs)

I need to make me some tea.

What she says.

Petit Prince found his best friend sitting next to him in the new class, and is now in secondary school, so everything "is smooth mom".
Petite Princesse is not in the same class as her best friend, and the teacher has a reputation of being nice but shouting a lot (that is fine with me, I would shout at those devils too in her place ) but Petite Princesse likes her () and..... Pedro sits next to her. And that, my friends, is .

What I have learned today is that the pink dress I had on "works". Some dads should learn not to glare, really. And I swear this was a very decent dress, a chinese one (I don't mean "made in China"), coming under the knee, no slits, no cleavage, no-nonsense. With their wives standing next to them .
Superman followed beppe's lead though and was in his surfer outfit, and that does NOT work. At least not in Spain, where Back to School - or more precisely Vuelta al Cole - is considered a formal thing. On the positive side, his hair is real short now and he is not too tanned, so he looks really good, just too casual. (and the guy wears suits like a god, but just not today)
I decided to send him over to Petit Prince while I stayed with Petite Princesse, who was a tad nervous (until she saw the name's tag on the table next to her ).
When I was assured that Princesse was doing good, I join my guys, who were goofing around, and we dropped Prince in his new class. He and Superman had to exchange the rocker's greeting before we left. I am sure the whole class (and their parents) really liked it....We are so getting invitations for Xmas .

Got them back both at 5.30pm, all went well, had to cover 10.000 books (or so it seems), am exhausted, will have a coke and go to bed.
Oh, no, I stand corrected. I will have a coke, fight the mosquitoes, and go to bed.

Edited to say : I'll pass the religious discussion. It is better for everyone if I do

@Iridal: one week ...well, keep yourself busy.

A) Good for you. Not so good for the wives of the glarers. About whom, who cares. Admiration of a pretty woman is always positive but to be pleasant must be more than discrete, it must be invisible to all (well, not to all all of course), especially in that contest. An almost hidden smile maybe. Some of the mothers in the school of little girl are cute, more so the teachers, actually. I am in excellent terms with them and with their husbands. There is one that is more than 6 feet tall, blonde. Pretty, oh pretty. So I told her, during a party. That I had a weak spot for her parameters. Not to be embarrassed if she surprised me daydreaming at her. Since then she is all smiles, we often chat of this and that. She told me that waking a man from his dreams is against her nature. We'll see. I am totally taken elsewhere. But she is pretty, and smart, married of course.

B) shhhh. What a pain. A man is a man. Once he is clean, as you say, well groomed, that's it. Let him be. Imagine if he glared.

Well, and to put it mildly and to be sarcastic (because if I was not, seriously, I would cry about it)... persecution is not my favorite kind of interaction between human beings. And as I know really well about persecution in the USSR, and as I have heard of it in China from chinese friends, I am not too crazy about communism, which seems not to be able to dissociate the pure political aspect of the doctrine (which I personally still think is pure crap) with the ideological one. And it cannot because if it was not promising BS to its people, no communist system would live longer than a decade. I was in Russia, before and after the Glasnost, many time, trying to get family members out. My husband lived in Berlin, he is not that crazy about the Wall either. People being shot down just trying to get out = not cool.

OK, that's been done, and since religion is not a good one either... a good recipe for cheesecake, or a game of croquet, anyone ?
