I have both. But I prefer my ereader (Kindle) for reading, because it is lighter than my iPad. I gravitate to the lightest - ipad over laptop, as lighter; kindle over ipad, as lighter.
I know other women who, having bought an iPad, are buying ereaders as well. Usually the reasons they give are: lighter weight, and ability to read in the sun, while they supervise their children outside at the beach, park, baseball games, etc. |

I believe that gender determine somewhat what device you use, but i would say that the gender bias is more obviously seen in what you read.
However these are trends with a VERY large dispersion and many many outliers.... Last edited by Salgueiros; 08-29-2011 at 08:02 PM. |

I suspect women may choose the ereader, in my case a color nook because tablets cannot really replace your laptop and unless they can they are not worth the extra money. For light web and email my nook works well at less than 1/2 an ipad. For real work or situations requiring big screen, higher speed or keyboard a laptop is still far superior especially dollar for dollar. I am male by the way. I feel women tend to be more practial about tech and more likely to only spend for a known purpose and less likely to buy because its cool. They reserve their impulse money for other areas.

Hmm, how is the Nook Color categorized? As e-reader or tablet?
As for the survey, it showed increasing market share for women regardless of device. It just so happened the adoption rate was much higher for e-readers than tablets - likely due to deep price cuts. If you just want something to read on, a $100~150 e-ink device looks much more attractive than a $400+ tablet. |

I don't understand the survey, but that's typical for me -- I haven't been able to make sense of *any* of the gender survey results that have been shared here. I think there are too many *other* non-disclosed factors and demographics that lead to those choices, rather than simply boy" vs "girl".
I'm a female with all three -- tablets, e-ink readers, and smartphones, plus an iPod Touch (which is either an unconnected smartphone or a mini-tablet, I am not sure what category it falls into.) I'm pretty sure that I didn't choose these items because I am a girl that wants to use them in girlie ways; I chose them because they meet *other* non-gender related needs that I may or may not share with other people who are either my gender or not my gender. ![]() |

![]() I know what the Nook Colour is, just wanted to say their owners are 'confused' as to their gender (i.e. gender specific when it comes to ereaders vs tablets, and NC is sort of both, thus confused item = confused gender) |
