All I knew about it was its healing effect for cuts and burns, direct application. We had Aloe Vera in every classroom in my school and teachers explained why it was good, something I dismissed as weird ideas of those silly grown ups...

astra that email is stunning. Why don't you try looking up Gong Fu and seeing if they will ship to the UK. I know that I like their Pu Erhs.

Irene was pretty boring. Some rain, some wind and that is about it. We lost power at 1 Am and had it back by 3. We are more inland though so this isn't a surprise.

Thanks. I will have a look.
First of all, I will try to find something closer to home. If not then I am going to broaden the boundaries of my surfing.

Wonderful that it didn't hurt you.
Hopefully others weathered Irene too.

Hi tea-lovers, I have a couple or questions and I hope that someone doesn't mind to answer them

1. I once read than somewhere (maybe Hong-Kong) they drink tea with Carnation milk. Then I mixed half a cup of English Breakfast tea with half a cup of Carnation milk with mixed results Is there a name for this concoction? What is the right way to prepare it?

2. I have seen in English movies that some people add milk to their tea. Is that Carnation milk or whole milk? What kind of tea is served at 5 o'clock? (I mean, if they still have this custom like in the movies).

Thanks

Most English people have tea with milk. Whole milk or skimmed milk, but not condensed milk.

A cup of tea (with biscuits and/or cakes and/or small sandwiches) is sometimes still taken in the late afternoon. In our house it was usually at more like 4pm or 4:30pm, after the children have got home from school.

What kind of tea? Most tea served in England is one of a variety of commercially blended black teas, almost always now in tea bags.

Dunno about England, but here in America some people add whole milk to their hot tea (not heard of anyone doing it to iced tea). Well really any kind of milk in all likelihood. We just call it tea.

Thanks for answering. Carnation milk is not condensed but evaporated milk. I like coffee with this kind of milk (more milk than coffee ) as the mixture is thicker and sweeter than with regular milk. But I was puzzled about the using of evaporated milk with tea.

Now, I just had a cup of red tea (aka pu-erh) (just tea, no milk )

Welcome!

Red tea is Rooibos. It is made from a plant found in South Africa and technically is not a tea because it is not made with, well, tea. Pu Erh is either a green/uncooked or black/cooked tea. It is made from tea grown in China but is processed differently then a black, green, or oolong.

Yerba Mate is a plant grown in South America that is used to make beverages. The traditional way of drinking mate is to tightly pack the leaves into a gourd and add hot water. The same gourd full of tea is re-steeped many, many times. They normally add sugar, honey, or other sweeteners because the mate itself is bitter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yerba_mat%C3%A9

I make my mate using stove top coffee maker for a more concentrated flavor and then add it to slightly warmed milk. Yerba Mate Latte.

Slow down, you move too fast;
You got to make the morning last;
Just kickin' down the cobblestones,
Lookin' for fun, and feelin' groovy.
Hello, lamppost, whatcha knowin'?
I've come to watch your flowers growin'.
Ain'tcha got no rhymes for me?
Dootin'-doo-doo-doo, feelin' groovy.
Ba da da da da da da, feelin' groovy.
Got no deeds to do, no promises to keep;
I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep;
Let the mornin' time drop all its petals on me.
Life, I love you, all is groovy.

( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqU9PqIhuIY )

What a delightful morning!

Good day everyone! Happy Monday! Sunny and a hint of cool in the air... no enough to get cocky about, but the summer's heat is definitly going to end! Good tea this morning! A big mug of East India Company's 'Assam' tea to go along with my bowl of rice and crab meat! No balance to this breakie but sure tastes good!

This is a VERY common style of service in peninsular Malaysia and Indonesia. If you visit 'bus station' type restaurants and Rest Stops, places that prepare ahead, you'll see stacks of trays with glasses filled half way with Carnation sweetened condensed milk. When a bus-load stops by and everyone needs to get served quickly, the servers just pour in coffee or tea into these glasses, depending upon the order. If one wants their coffee or tea without Carnation, you have to ask for it and get looked at as if you have two heads!

I think you are beginning to understand why I love the Chinese Black teas so much, even the lesser priced ones! They have such a pronounced flavor, usually a very robust tea that can easily stand on its own.

I'm not want to be disrespectful with a tea master but the tea bag I have says "Red Tea (Pu-Erh Camellia Sinensis L.)". I looked the "rooibos" entry in wikipedia and it seems it's another thing.

I usually lurks on this (and others MR threads for that matter) and I always ready to learn from the masters.

I see this tea/carnation milk mixture is common in Malaysia. Does it has a name? (or it is just known as (tea-with-carnation-milk )?

*** Edit ***

It seems that it has a name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teh_See)

My second cup of tea this evening (still Sunday 5:32 PM) is another Chinese tea: Bojenmi tea.

*** Another Edit ***

What I was looking in the first place: the name in HK is "dai pai dong milk tea" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong-style_milk_tea)

What brand are you drinking?

You learn something new everyday, I have never heard of Pu Erh as a red tea. Red tea has always been Rooibos in the stores I have shopped at.

http://www.teblanco.org/white-tea_ar...u-erh-tea.html

At first I thought you were talking about red label Pu Erh and was going to be jealous. One references a specific pu erh from 1955 that sells for an insane amount of money. http://www.redcircletea.com/blog/?p=15

As it's the most common way that tea and coffee are served there, it's just asked for as tea (or 'teh' in Behassa Malay) or coffee (kopi). While there is a specific name for the combination, I never hear it being used. It would be like telling your waiter to be sure to bring milk and sugar when he brings the coffee. It's just not needed as it's the norm.

Having another mug of Assam... You just can't go wrong when it's from the East India Company! This will be my third large mug in two hours. I may never be able to get more than a few steps away from a bathroom all day!
