Interesting. I wonder if there's a correlation between being able to put books down and having a high availability of books all the time.

When I was younger and had less pocket money, I usually only had one new book at a time. I sat down, I read it, I got another one.

Now I have literally 1,000+ new books to read and in a variety of topics and subjects. I pick one up, I read awhile, I put it down (because Real Life calls), and when I read again it may be something entirely different. I may come back to Book 1 or I may never pick it up again.

It's almost like the fact that I have a veritable "buffet" of books has made me more casual. "Not finishing" doesn't really feel like a waste anymore, because I got the book cheap/freely. Switching around is more a matter of sampling different tastes and realizing that the other dish isn't going anywhere.

At least that's my take on it.

CatLady, I almost always put down books simply because Real Life intervenes. It's in the picking up a book that I may choose to pick up something other than what I was reading earlier. If that makes sense.

Lol, it was an accidental download from my local library, I'd certainly not have 'paid' for it.

Something I've been doing since I was a kid. I often had 2 to 3 books going at a time. I also don't force myself to finish a book I don't like. I used to, but then I figured, life is too short.

What can I say, I'm odd( or lovably eccentric)

I am definitely reading more since I got my kindle and my husband who never used to read has been reading a lot since he got his nook.

Dunno really, maybe because I can? I keep one reader in my handbag, one by the bed and usually read pbooks or listen to audio books in the lounge.

BTW once upon a time I always finished a book if I started it, but now if it bores me I don't bother.

I do read several books at the same time sometimes. It all depends on the mood. However, I noticed that I use the Kindle exclusively for the reading, while Xoom for browsing. The others are gathering dust.

I'm sure that is a factor. After all, if you have only a limited amount of books, you'll probably 'nurse' them so they last longer. Once you have a lot, there is this subconscious urge to finish them sooner, as if we were on a time limit.

For me, I never actually read more than two at a time - one on my Nook, and one paperback. Yup, I still have a few pbacks that I have yet to finish. Once I'm done, though, I'll probably revert to my original "one at a time" state.

I have two devices at home, but generally only one book going on one device or the other at any given time. I also have a different book going on my iPhone when I'm away from the house and waiting (restaurant, doctor's office, etc.). In addition, I usually listen to an audiobook while I'm driving.

. It annoys me though, not not to finish a book, but to see how some even less than mediocre books manage to get good reviews, and trap me into buying them...
