Other companies only report shipped. Apple's latest 10-Q is here. Page 28 shows how Apple reveals both net sales by dollars, and by units. (and note AppleTV isn't broken out, nor are individual mac models like the Air) 10-Qs are public information for any publicly traded corporation-I do not believe any of the other tablet manufacturers break out unit sales like this-but I don't know for sure.

Second one quotes same report, so the same numbers. Third one states 30% in Q2.

Just to add, the reason Google's publicly released "Android activations by version" is interesting is because it can theoretically more accurately portray units in a customer's hands, not on some shelf or in inventory, assuming that the activation means "in use".

So for Q2 2011 Apple sold 9.3 million ipads compared to 3.3 million in Q2 2010. The percentage from Android comes from 4.6 million tablets being shipped in Q2 2011. And while you are right, and not all of the Android tablets that were shipped were actually sold, some of the tablets shipped in previous quarters and were sold in Q2.

It should, but it's difficult to differentiate between phones and tablets. You can't just do it based on 3.x vs 2.x, because there are more models with 2.x on the market, and they tend to be cheaper.

Show me the 10-Qs of the Android tablet manufacturers with their official sales or even official shipped numbers, and show me how they add up to 4.6 million units. Because I've looked, and couldn't even come close to that based on published figures (not analyst estimates).

I agree 100% with these sentiments.

I think they are counting 'tablets' as configured and built from the manufacturer.

And lets start leaving the OS out of it and just count hardware moved by manufacturer.

Do you know if Apple considers the ipads shipped to retailers like Amazon as sold?

I don't want an iPad, but I do want a bigger android tablet than my Nook Color. And better battery capacity would be nice. The clicher would be being able to write with a stylus and have the tablet turn it into text. I'd buy that in a heartbeat and am watching HTC attentively. I own a lot of apps in the Google Market already. Most of those are compatible for tablet use on my Nook Color. No reason to dump all that and switch to Apple for a tablet device... not to mention that I'm one of those hive-mind Apple haters. |

But I wouldn't mind something with a bigger screen, longer battery life, and stylus writing. But it's got to have access to the Google Market -- that's a deal breaker for me. If that sexy HTC tablet has the stylus writing that the ads claim, that's what Ana is getting for Yule, I think.
