Well, sure... I mean, I guess it makes sense from a cold, detached, marketing-bot standpoint to include all the books EXCEPT the single book which changes everything in the main character's life from that point forward, and which subsequent events would make no sense without. It's a critical framing point for 'Komarr' and 'A Civil Campaign', the latter of which might be my favorite of the whole series... except, of course, for 'Memory' itself.

Anyway, either myself or my wife bought all of them (we traded off, because we read them before Cryoburn and the CD came out), and I would have bought them even I had read them for free, because they're just that damn good. Authors like LMB deserve every penny they get, and probably a lot more that they don't get.

I doubt it, I really do.

Not that I feel that it is in any way, shape or form, wrong to use said marketing tactics... But one would expect a notice somewhere on the CD, a clear link to webscription page where one can purchase a title to complete the series. I found no evidence on that CD that Baen has intentionally omitted the book to generate sales.

Further, there was at least one of their CD's where a book existed on the CD, could be retrieved from the file browser, but was not linked to the HTML wrappers used to browse the content.

Diplomatic Immunity. It's available on the Cryoburn CD, but not linked from the top (index.htm) file.

One of the explanations for Memory not being on the CD, is that it's the only novel not included in an omnibus at the time of distribution.

I have a vague memory of being told that Memory was on the CD but left off the directory so you had to go hunting for it. Never checked the accuracy of this as I already had the e-book. Perhaps someone else would like to try it.

Edit: Reading jgaiser I see that I remembered the wrong title.

A friend of mine told me about Bujold many, many years ago. Around the late 90's I think.

So when I flew to the USA for a holiday in 2001, I took along "A Civil Campaign" to read on the plane. The first leg was from Perth to Sydney, then Sydney to Hawaii. I did not stop reading the whole flights to Hawaii, reading even when I ate my served meals.

Wonderful stuff to read. I became an instant fan.
